I think the biggest contributor to the spectacle has been computers.  The amount of AI processing now, and before that, computationally derived simulations means that all strategies converge on an optimum approach even before the compound hits the circuit - the cars are relatively dialled in prior to arrival and are only tweaked (assuming correlation has been achieved).  Before this, sometime around the mid-2000s it was done by driver feel and could produce wildly different performance of the course of the race from teammates let alone teams.

If I could do one thing, that would be it to start with and let the drivers/mechanics/strategists 'feel' their way through the practice sessions.

It's a bit like wind tunnel and CFD testing, there's not putting that horse back in the stable. I recall watching an interview with Eddie Irvine and he talked about preseason testing (basically banned now) and how Schumacher had Irvine sent to the beach for a month and did thousands of kilometres himself instead testing.

Even with mandatory multiple compounds you'll see stupid stuff happening that no one planned for, IE Monaco where drivers who qualified nowhere near their team mate were used to slow the field down and create pit gaps to allow the mandatory compound switch.

With three compounds the same thing would happen, some would start on a hard, hope for a couple of safety cars or pit on the final two laps to swap. Or they'd use the lower qualifying driver to back up the drivers who had already made their stops to create room for the team mate up the road.

I don't genuinely know what the answer is, and I agree, in terms of the season it's been entertaining to see Verstappen come back, the McLaren interplay, but by and large the actual racing has been a little dull. DRS trains etc. I'd be interested to see a stat say of the order after the first lap, vs the order at the end of the race to see how consistent it is.

Less practice time on track does this.  You often see drivers out of position as such on sprint weekends, as those who can get to grips quickly benefit.

I'd like to see tyres that don't last, forcing a two stop strategy, even go a step further, make two stops the mandatory minimum. Remove the Save the Tyres mentality

They've already tried this, with tyres that "fell off a cliff" when they reached a point. There will always be a save the tyre element if the stop is more expensive than going slower on a harder tyre.

New rule then, can only change 2 tyres per stop.

Stuff had an article that Max is the WDC favourite , so I checked the TAB

Mexico quali Max hot favourite

Mexico race the favourite, but less so than quali

WDC Max is the favourite by a small margin over Oscar, similar small margin back to Lando

Its about momentum, RBR on the rise, McLaren have peaked, plus add in McLaren driver pressure

The potential disintegration of McLaren's season will be interesting to view from the comfort of our couches. I wonder if when Norris and Piastri close their eyes at night they have a recurring dream of seeing Robert Patrick in a police uniform running at them in their rear view mirrors. One of those sports where the expression "the wheels fell off" may have added meaning.

Hoping for Lawson to have a weekend resulting in points. I suspect Red Bull will further delay their driver decision, or equally they could announce one of Tsunoda or Lawson is done and Lindblad is in from the next race.

It will be interesting to see the reception Lawson gets from the Mexican fans and whether additional security might be considered necessary. You'd hope they might have calmed down now that Perez has a new drive next season, but I'm sure a few of them might consider it poetic justice were Lawson to lose his seat on their soil.

Seems Lindblad isn't that great, and the consensus is he needs another year first. But Marko may just throw him in and cross fingers

I feel Liam is in there 2026. thats not inherent bias

Probably suit the McLarens!!

Honestly I don't know what the answer is. We all know the is a direct correlation in making your own car go fast aerodynamically at great cost to those following. One thing I miss about MotoGP was on a big straight, the guy who was eighth at the start of the straight could get to the corner first courtesy of the hole punched in the air in front. Doesn't seem to happen anymore with the winglets etc.

The hybrid era was a bit of a death blow for me. One of my life highlights was going to the British Grand Prix in 2000. The sound was astonishing. Hearing them start up from where I was at the Hanger Straight was unbelievable. First run past and everyone was scrabbling for ear protection. And what never came across on TV was hearing them boom, crackle and backfire under brakes like a V8 supercar which I never expected, I always associated F1 with the screaming RPMs and never heard the low stuff on TV.

I agree, he is decidedly average in my view but, as we know, F1 is a fair bit about perception. I've read it suggested that Red Bull only gave Hadjar the seat because they didn't have anyone better and he was P2 in F2. Yet, Lindblad is P7, sitting on a mountain of penalty points, not even ahead of his own teammate, and is still the next big thing in Marko's eyes. Makes little actual sense to me based on results.

Still believe the smartest decision would be to continue with the same four drivers in the same four seats as they begin the season next year at least. The car and especially the PU are big unknowns and I'd rely on Lawson to be able to better develop a car over Liindblad, given the former's many years as their factory simulator guy.

But, it sounds like Marko is the loudest voice on drivers again so it will be interesting to see where it goes. They should be patient and let the current line-ups percolate until mid-2026 but I'm not sure they will.

So far the only thing I think Lindblad truly excels in, is whining on the radio, but he wouldn't be alone in that skill! He was fast enough when he was down in the local Toyota Formula Regional Series at the start of the year, but not really against any known competition so very hard to judge from that. But comparing him to Lando, Stroll, Zhou and others when they were down over the years he's not at their levels (at the time), maybe similar to Yuki when he was here, but Yuki has only managed to take big steps in the last couple seasons.

From what I saw and heard Lindblad needs a good reality check, which I'm quite sure he'd get in F1, but he doesn't appear to be registering it in F2 so it might just go over his head in F1 as well.

I was happy when I saw the Mexican GP is on at 9am so I could watch at work again, then my mind clicked its Labour day!

So I'm even happier I can watch it live from the comfort of my own couch with my TV.

I see the media is trying its best to be sensationalist by stating the Liam is being replaced in FP1 this weekend by a rookie driver.

What the Stuff article then goes on to say (very late in the piece) is that he's one of many who are giving up their seats in FP1, due to the F1 rule that all drivers must give up a Free Practice seat twice at a minimum per season to give rookies a drive.
