I also wonder how this will affect viewers habits. Before Sky people watch what they want, its free. Non Sky might visit friends, go to the pub but as they can watch for a small fee, will they subscribe? Both Sky and non Sky people? Will they go for the tourney pass, or be selective and just get what they must watch? So the AB 's vs Greenland :-) etc can be bypassed. Maybe watch the FTA and pay for a two or three match passes. Streaming too hard? Go to a friends. Hard to know

I won't be. I only have so many $$ a month to throw at things and my Spark bill comes first and I still have to pay for Sky.

Unbundling of sports rights will result in a massive loss of value for sports fans who follow more than one sport. This is probably not a road we can come back from once we start to go down it.

Imagine if sport in NZ was split between 4 providers, Sky Spark, and a couple of startups. The single subscription that we now pay Sky, which covers transmission costs, staff costs, profit and so on , now has four lots of these to be covered. The overall costs has to go up. Then these services fail one after the other

And this is the issue. Splitting is good if you only like 1 sports and happy to pay x amount a year for that 1 sport. Start wanting to watch more than 1 sport and this is when the prices start to increase fast.

Bag sky all you want but for sports people its a good deal. You get a min of 6 sports channels plus pop ups (when they have them) for less than $30 a month (only talking sports package price). Even with the added cost of the starter pack now the total is only $55 a month. Less than $2 a day.

People always b***h about the price of sky but think nothing of paying $5 for a cup of coffee in the morning which in some examples is more than they are paying for sky per day.

This is another issue with people going to the pub. The rights are different between streaming at home and streaming in a public place. Unless each pub/public place gets the correct rights to stream then they won't be able too.

This is another issue with people going to the pub. The rights are different between streaming at home and streaming in a public place. Unless each pub/public place gets the correct rights to stream then they won't be able too.

I don't know how people manage to make going to the pub cheaper than a month's Sky bill. Not only do I end up spending more $55 but I also usually can't remember what happened.

The days of me watching Formula One qualifying in the middle of a dance floor in the Viaduct are thankfully long gone.

Well if you only wanted the RWC you would have just bought the Fanpass(or what ever they call it) for the event from sky.

The biggest losers from this are the rural NZnders on some crappy rural broadband with slow speeds or limited data.

...then you'd still have Super Rugby/NPC, the other All Blacks games that year and all the other sports coverage from Sky? I'm struggling to think of a serious sports fan who would sign up for solely the RWC but not watch Super Rugby or the other All Blacks game and still see that as better value tbh.

To be fair to Lightbox, they don't support this device.

But that is my point: When they say "every device" what do they mean and will I be able to get the rugby onto my big screen Smart TV?

For the same reasons that Lightbox doesn't work, I'd imagine you may run in to issues with this. They'll suggest it's to do with the security of the stream, or something.

Interesting point you raise though, as I've not had any issue casting directly to my Chromecasts, or my Android TV.

No doubt we'll get the inevitable sign up for a two year Spark broadband contract and get a "free" world cup pass deal, possibly with a cheap streaming puck also thrown in.

Shouldn't be too hard to come up with a plug and play experience for the oldies/technophobes with everything pre-loaded on a puck.

And nothing to stop them selling $200 pass/puck bundles in Noel Leeming etc.

Still think there's a potential for a massive sh*t storm from rural NZ if the performance isn't there.

They actually said "a wide range of devices – including TVs, laptops, tablets and mobile phones"

Well if you only wanted the RWC you would have just bought the Fanpass(or what ever they call it) for the event from sky.

For a product with less flexibility than the Spark proposal and probably at a cost greater than the Spark offering as well (if 2015 Sky FanPass pricing is a guide).

i did a cost comparison on the sports i watch on Sky and the cost of watching them with a yearly subscription as individual sports and it worked out at just under a $1000 a year on Sky and just under $2000 as buying the subs, double the cost, and with Sky i could watch one sport and record 2 others i wanted to watch and record sports when the times were off , hard to do that with streams.

Common sense is not as common as you think.
