It will be interesting to see if TNZ can overtake if they start behind. It's bound to happen at some point over the next few races (losing the start).

Yes, that would be interesting. As the commentators say and as the after-match numbers show, most stats are incredibly close. One difference seems to be, as Peter Lester pointed out a couple of times today, TNZ has an edge because they appear to be able to tack and gybe quicker than the Brits and accelerate back up to speed more quickly. That could be skill and/or hardware but is probably both.

I thought Ainslie was decent about it too, especially after they got run down and overtaken.

 

He was incredibly sour the whole race yesterday, he barely said a word. Todays race he was much more animated.

NZ have a significant advantage in these light conditions. Their distance lost in tacks and gybes is minimal and thatโ€™s giving them the luxury of tacking and gybing whenever they want to make tactical or wind gains. The Brits will be desperate for heavier conditions to minimise that advantage.

Whoever designed the foils and rudder is winning this thing for NZ.

Today we sailed 200m further than the Brits and made a total of 64 tacks tacks/gybes/manoeuvres against their 62 - small differences but your point is well made - we can change course almost at will without that holding us back.

According to this NZH story I was wrong - it wasn't McIvor who mentioned rock/scissors to Ainslie in the post-race cockpit comments, it was Glenn Ashby. McIvor interviewed Ainslie later, on-shore.

Yeah - and they did a few down-speed tacks in that 62 as well. It meant they could change sides at will with minimal penalty which made it very hard for the Brits to stay on top of them.

 

At one point today they were forced to tack twice in quick succession near the port side boundary by the Brits. That should have killed them with a tack then a down-speed tack. They somehow coast through them without too much penalty.

Re tacks, yes that seems to be a small advantage. In Kiwi's interest to make both boats tack more to build the gains up
