Another win to TNZ. I wonder if that penalty at the start had a huge bearing on it since NZ seemed to increase its lead all the time and Brits just could not catch up?

They came back into it after serving the penalty - the graphics were showing neck and neck at one point. TNZ kept defending the right and it paid off in the top 1/3rd of the leg.

It will be interesting to see if TNZ can overtake if they start behind. It's bound to happen at some point over the next few races (losing the start).

Yes, that would be interesting. As the commentators say and as the after-match numbers show, most stats are incredibly close. One difference seems to be, as Peter Lester pointed out a couple of times today, TNZ has an edge because they appear to be able to tack and gybe quicker than the Brits and accelerate back up to speed more quickly. That could be skill and/or hardware but is probably both.

^^ Couldn’t have got much closer without damage - the foils were overlapping under the water.

Intentionally or not, Steven McIvor got well under Ben Ainslie’s skin in a post-race interview today - NZH story. However it seems Ainslie is known for having a short fuse.

Under the circs of McIvor’s question, it would have been funny if Anslie had had the chutzpah or the quick wit to channel his inner-Spithill and say to the Kiwis “Imagine if you lost seven races from here”. πŸ˜€

Yes...I think if there is one nation that knows "it ain't over 'til it's over", it's New Zealand.

I like that Ainslie said he "may have" known that his mic was still hot.

McIvor probably doesn't want to take his sponsored car to Weymouth.

Ainslie is pretty notorious for being a bit of a dick. He's probably feeling like he's under pressure and reverting to type.

I thought Steven McIvor handled things quite well when interviewing Ainslie after today’s race - by briefly acknowledging yesterday’s little contre temp and making light of it.

McIvor said to Ainslie that the three commentators had “… played rock, scissors, stone to see who got to ask [Ainslie] the questions today”. A flicker of a smile from Ainslie.

I thought Ainslie was decent about it too, especially after they got run down and overtaken.

He was incredibly sour the whole race yesterday, he barely said a word. Todays race he was much more animated.

NZ have a significant advantage in these light conditions. Their distance lost in tacks and gybes is minimal and that’s giving them the luxury of tacking and gybing whenever they want to make tactical or wind gains. The Brits will be desperate for heavier conditions to minimise that advantage.

Whoever designed the foils and rudder is winning this thing for NZ.

Up to a point - but don't forget the skill of the crew.

Today we sailed 200m further than the Brits and made a total of 64 tacks tacks/gybes/manoeuvres against their 62 - small differences but your point is well made - we can change course almost at will without that holding us back.

According to this NZH story I was wrong - it wasn't McIvor who mentioned rock/scissors to Ainslie in the post-race cockpit comments, it was Glenn Ashby. McIvor interviewed Ainslie later, on-shore.

Yeah - and they did a few down-speed tacks in that 62 as well. It meant they could change sides at will with minimal penalty which made it very hard for the Brits to stay on top of them.

At one point today they were forced to tack twice in quick succession near the port side boundary by the Brits. That should have killed them with a tack then a down-speed tack. They somehow coast through them without too much penalty.

Re tacks, yes that seems to be a small advantage. In Kiwi's interest to make both boats tack more to build the gains up
