Yep, Lando is a good one for the future.. I really like him and George... seem to have a lot of fun and Albon is nice as well.

I disagree with the penalty on Hamilton though (I'll preface this and say he's my current #1 driver since I saw him race for McLaren in 2007 at the Hungarian Grandprix); he didn't alter his steering angle once he started the turn and Albon was on the outside not the inside... A racing incident yes, but not a direct penalty unlike Brazil which was just poor from Lewis.  You could really see the fragility in the cars and I do wonder if Max's retirement was caused by his aggressive driving over the kerbs; he gains time this way but this circuit is not suited to it as it shakes them badly... plus the earlier circuits allow the cars to shake out their gremlins as they're slightly more gentle...

I don't think we saw how effective DAS is but you could see after the first restart how the Mercs where able to sprint away and Lewis was able to catch Bottas until they got the hold station message... the second safety car occurred when they where already suffering sensor problems so couldn't show it again.

Ferarri really do have a terrible car compared to their investment level... they did better due to the failures of those at the front and the pink panthers managing issues but meh they're as disappointing as they predicted... And Seb still can't battle wheel to wheel.

Yep, he punched above his age alright.

It goes to show what a few random variables can make for an exciting race. What they regulate that, getting rid of tyres that last years would help, as would mandatory 2 minimim pit stops.

I see the Albon incident as Lewis's fault. Albon was ahead, by what looks to be 3/4 of a car length, and while Lewis didn't push him off (you can see that in his steering) the rule says you have to give room. It could be that Lewis couldn't and he understeered into him, but still his error. Or that the thought the young gun might give up to the 6 time champ< which could easily have happened. Not bad driving, not ruthless, but he broke the rule. Given he just got a 5 second penalty is quite light as he out the other guy out, perhaps thats a reflection on not a bad driving effort, just a rule break.

to be fair to my perspective I haven't yet seen the above top shots to see how they both entered the corner; lewis had the inside and didn't adjust, alex had the outside but the grippier tire and possibly fully operational gearbox (you could see how much slower the merc was running as a result) and therefore had more ability to slingshot out.. but I've seen lots of those that are given as 50/50... either way the car issues is a good mixup but I suspect we'll see further performance from Merc from the other tracks; they where .5s a lap faster on the shortest track of the season... what are they going to be like on the longer ones?!  Surprised that Mercedes didn't allow him past Bottas to get away and attempt to keep 3rd; either way happy for Lando!

Yep, Mercedes will continue to blow everyone away, I have no issue with that anymore. Best package, best results. There is a lot more going on below them now, a different mix of cars and drivers, plenty to see.

Normally I only watch the start of FP1 for any news, then the last 30 mins of FP3 and just quali (no buildup), and maybe a bit of buildup for the race. Ie watched every minute this time round, its been so long, although with the race I got up at 4-30 and watched a few minutes before the lights went out. Enjoyed it.

Yeah bit disappointed by that, lots of money no doubt to drive a fairly uncompetitive car and most likely complain about it while depriving a talented youngster a drive... personally think he should have stayed away.

There’s always the dream of pulling it back like it once was, but bottom line is one period had a super competitive car and this one is pretty crap really. Kinda like the McLaren and Honda revival, where this time around the engine was crap and McLaren just did 3 years of testing and development to hand to Red Bull.

2021 is now locked in with this years rules and no change until 2022 now from memory, so expect just more of the same.

Ferrari seems the weirdest situation now, as they were a clear second last year but slow now despite a huge investment.

Upgrade testing, reliability sorting out, young driver programme for super license points etc.  Taking that away not only limits the upgrade comparison but also the other programmes the teams run.

Hamilton shows who's boss.

Is there going to be rain tonight?

Reports where saying it was supposed to be dry but overcast... If its dry the merc will be off in to the distance; think they'll run red boots to give them initial sprint and grip and then use their speed advantage to get a 1-2... if wet then its all open... Lewis would be favourite but Max will be up there, especially at the start... but then if its too wet they start behind the safety car in which case then it will probably be a lewis/max 1-2 barring any technical failures.

Yes hard to argue. IIRC sunny and cool for the race
