The annual 24 Hours of Le Mans race is this weekend, but as usual, the only coverage here will be via the interweb

This years running also marks the 50th anniversary of when 2 kiwi's won the race outright (Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon) in a Ford GT40 Mk II

Fittingly, this year there are kiwi's racing as well, with a chance of claiming outright victory and class wins.

  • Brendon Hartley competing in the LMP1 class with the Factory Porsche (Porsche 919 Hybrid, car #1)
  • Scott Dixon competing in the LM GTE-Pro with the 'Factory' Ford GT run by Chip Ganassi racing (Ford GT, car # 69)
  • Earl Bamber competing in the LM GTE-Pro with the Factory Porsche (Porsche 911 R, car #92)
  • Richie Stanaway competing in the LM GTE-Pro with Aston Martin (Aston Martin Vantage, car # 97)

Ideally, to mark the occasion, an outright win by the Hartley car and class win for Dixon would be awesome.

Brendon Hartley has marked the occasion with a special helmet

Any one else going to be following the race?

A couple of official live streaming sites:

http://www.porsche.com/international/motorsportandevents/motorsport/worksracing/raceseries/fiawec/livestreaming/

(something's not right with streaming on that page on my computer at least - it's skipping frames and freezing in web page view, but when the live stream window is maximised, it's working fine - just a little low res)

Ford streaming through youtube:

Those streams seem to work ok.  There's another live feed on youtube.

The soundtrack on those Porsche 919 on the site linked above is truly awful IMO - but probably real.  I guess it is the hybrid drive energy recovery on braking, then release when it comes out of a corner is a crazy whine, then when it cuts out there's the not really awesome sound of a 2l V4.  Still, 900hp (500 from engine + 400 from motor) and under 900kg weight - it goes quite okay.

Unbelievable finish - and bad luck for Toyota.

I was going to say they seized defeat from the jaws of victory - but that's not really right.  The gods simply weren't smiling for them.

pretty common occurrence in this race, but maybe not on the very last lap.

I've just seen the footage of the Toyota breaking down. Absolutely gut wrenching for the team.

Bad luck for Brendon Hartley in the Porsche 919 Hybrid going out of contention early with a broken water pump, but still finishing in 13th overall

Congrats to Scott Dixon with 3rd in class in the Ford GT, 20th position overall

Richie Stanaway finished 6th in class in the Aston Martin, 24th position overall
