I'm really hoping Williams do better this year despite now being a Mercedes fan. For much of the late '90s and early 2000s I used to switch my allegiances between McLaren and Williams. Williams have just quite simply sucked in recent years with their car, so hopefully the new Mercedes engine gives them a performance boost. Likewise McLaren dumping Honda will hopefully see gains for them.

Thoughts on the new Halo?

Points to look out for:

McLaren being free of Honda
Toro Rosso picking up Honda
Toro Rosso picking up Brendon Hartley
Formula E being pretty darn cool, and F1 trying work out how they're going to stay relevant long term
Liberty Media owning F1 now and maybe making something more of it, especially the Fan and streaming options

Is there an option view without Sky in NZ yet?

Really hoping for a contest this year. I'm a big McLaren fan (got to support the team with kiwi links!) but have lost interest the last few years with one team (Red Bull then Mercedes) being so far out in front of the pack. Obviously be good if McLaren were part of that picture! My favourite seasons were the late 90s and the epic McLaren Ferrari / Hakkinen Schumacher battles.

Halos look awful but I can understand the safety concerns. I'd really prefer it if they changed the rules to have much bigger tyres for mechanical grip or maybe even bring back ground effect, but lose all the stupid winglets and protuberances. If I can't have a nice sounding car I'd like a nice looking car!

yea i dont think they are worried about Formula E at all.

are you asking about a 100% legal way to view it outside Sky NZ? not so much, but there is a bunch of other ways.. you can PM me if you want to know some.

i cant wait to see how ridiculous the halo looks when aero fairing are added to it (not that it doesn't look silly just by itself)

Martin Brundle on Twitter this morning (Martin + Murray Walker = the sound of Formula 1... I'm too young for the James Hunt glory years but he sounded awesome). Tongue in cheek, offered to get back behind the wheel, but only if "it come[s] with a hacksaw to cut off the Halo".

Hamilton is going to win. I don't see anyone building cars that can challenge Merc. I really hope I'm wrong, but the Merc procession has gone a bit OTT.

Anyone know where the test videos are online. SkySportF1 has lost rights ti some races, so I assume they haven't covered testing?

I hope Bottas sets his goals high. I can see him going hard, even if Toto W and Niki L dont want that.

Just watched the test sessions, just a week to go now.

The general media pick is Mercedes, RBR and Ferrari.

The mid pack is unknown, Haas going very well, McLaren having issues, Williams on the back foot, Force India still broke but big upgrades coming as can't afford them at testing. Toro Rosso and our own Brendan Hartley piling on the laps.

Mercedes are seen to be well in control still, but they still have tyre issues.

While Im not that bothered if they dominate (as I enjoy the other cars racing), if RBR or Ferrari can close the gap enough, that narrow gap may give rise to pressure. Pressure as in using the engine modes more, etc. Its nice to have a buffer, that may change.
