I wonder what the future holds for FanPass?

Sky charges $100 a month (yes, cheaper for long periods) but surely they could offer better products than this? For example, why can't there be a Rugby FanPass, a Soccer FanPass, a Netball or a Cricket FanPass each sold separately for much lower prices?

I don't understand why Sky aggregates every sport into this very expensive all or nothing product when so many people might only be interested in one or two sports?

Fanpass used to offer season passes for some sports. From memory a Super15 (?) season pass cost $300, a Formula 1 season pass cost about the same and a NRL season pass cost about the same. Fanpass discontinued them a year later - not sure whether it was a demand issue or a rights issue.

Just remember that to watch a 1 month long tournament next year is going to cost somewhere around $100 - for just one sport. Casual watching of 4 channels of sport for $100 doesnt sound outrageous given that you can have up to 70 hours of live sport on just one Saturday. You want to watch a season of Super18 - that'll be about $330 (6 months at $55/mth) and you get every other sport for free.

Or for $55/mth you get 4 channels of sport plus pop ups - and a bunch of other channels that you may or may not watch at no additional cost.

You need to factor in the costs of running the business, not what suits your particular pocket. You rarely buy your weekly products from charities, Sky is no exception.

Yep, those channels no longer offer significant value when major sport events(not ppv) are on popup channels that don't get included in this deal

NZD17/mth gets you English Premier League. Or AUD15/mth in Australia. So you want many sports and lots of live coverage for less than a provider charges you for just one sport?? Think about than for a moment. You want the best rugby comp in the world for less than the price of a 2nd tier sport (by interest/viewership).

Thing is, Sky is hitting that point where the cost is simply too great for most punters to bare - more and more, if there's something on you want to watch, you either all crowd at a mates place and disperse the cost, or you all visit the local and grab a handle or two while you watch your game/s.

It's worsened by the fact that Sky's business is almost exclusively lodged in the most dire part of the old media market - distribution. It's a global world, and Sky can't negotiate against the big boys.

My theory is as more and more of the elderly do as the elderly do, the Sky subscriber base will shrink down further and further, there's very few people I know who have Sky, and those that do are elderly or live rural. To be honest I can't blame the pricing - it's almost like the last good squeeze of the fruit before it dries up.

Apparently $15/week for a sporting event is too much. Even if only watch one match per week then your cost of entertainment is too high. Imagine finding a live event that you can watch for that price!
