With almost every medical expert in the World saying that the Corona virus could be with us for a year or more when will the IOC make a decision?   My guess - it could come within a week.  Postponement for a year might be the least bad option.

No way can it go ahead. Maybe end of year at very best.

I think its possibly a case of who blinks first - IOC or Japan. I suspect the financial hit is predicated on which party cancels, i.e. if the IOC cancel they wear more of the losses, if Japan do it the IOC blames them and Japan wears the loss.

Just my opinion.

it would be postponed a whole year,  The timing of the Olympics is basically driven by US sports seasons and TV networks,

Why can't they just postpone it for four years? That way it's still in sync with other regular sporting events, and shouldn't cause disruptions. Japan still holds the event at that time (2024), and other countries already preparing to host future events will have an extra four years to recover and prepare (so 2028 will be Paris, and so on).

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Large number of athletes have trained for entire lives for their chance at gold.

Some of them won't be at their peak (or competitive at all) in 4 years time and have missed the opportunity...

I think they should postpone for exactly one Year.  Then hold the 2024 games as scheduled.   Some top junior athletes and gymnasts plan years and years ahead & this would offer them a fair outcome.   There are some sports such as pistol shooting and equestrian where age is less important but in other sports such as gymnastics age is hugely important.

So you think that’s a good enough reason to just go ahead with them regardless?

Because of money. It'll happen next year.

Another major problem with holding it this year is so many build up events have been cancelled. A lot of athletes were planning on using the upcoming competitions to hit the Olympic qualifying standard. I heard somewhere the rules allow for a postponement for up to two years so they have no reason to try to hold the schedule as it stands. The games have been cancelled before as well but not since so much money had been involved.

Didn't say they shouldn't delay, just noting it's a bit different to all the other sport being cancelled (weekly games/races events).
