I thought I'd start a different thread for 7's as whilst I don't expect it to get as much traffic as the Union thread, I think it's worth it's own thread if only to help keep Union cleaner.

Some great 7's nominations here. Michela Blyde is spectacular and I think she deserves it.

On a side note, got an email that it will be on Stan Sport.

Hopefully it will be broadcast in 4K.

The NZ Womens 7's continue their recent rampant form with consecutive title wins tonight in HK. Slow start to the season, but they are looking hard to beat.

As always, they continue to be sensational role models too.

Because of the viewer friendly timezone, the (just completed) Hong Kong 7s was the first tournament I have watched live in ages. What stood out to me is how much the “minnows” of the game have improved.
Also, where the game used to be all about high speed attack, now defence plays just as big a role. That was particularly evident in the men’s NZ vs France final.

The women’s result in the final appears to have been easier, but on the way to the final they suffered their first pool play loss in goodness knows how long (to France) which meant they faced Australia in the semis. That was a much tougher game, which could have gone either way and was an edge-of-the-seat watch.

With the competition leaders (Argentina) not making it out of pool play and the formerly mighty Fiji being knocked out in the quarters, I don’t believe any team will be making space on the shelf for an Olympic Gold just yet.

Yeah, I figured the women would have a pretty comfortable win over USA, they have come a ways, but they aren't in the same league as NZ.

The mens game, it was probably the most defensive match I've seen a while.

Scott Curry is a tough so and so, limping like that and then scores. I think most people would have been asking why he wasn't replaced.

I am surprised to see that World Rugby have lost a lot of money on 7's in the last year.

It seems one of the better attended tournament series, largely due to the fact it's usually highly entertaining and very accessible from a end user watching perspective.

I guess some details will come to light as to what the costs are vs the revenue.

Sevens is a difficult game to get right with it's cost base. With 24 teams you are looking at at least 360 players and officials for each tournament. Moving them around the world and accommodating them is a significant cost before you look at salaries. From what I have read world rugby also send a significant number of fish heads who further add cost to the tournament.

Dubai is one of the tournaments that makes money but IMO that is largely due to the community tournament. The facility here has 8 rugby pitches as well as three cricket ovals, four netball courts and half a dozen padel courts which are all used for different sports over the weekend. There are thousands of people playing as well as watching the pro tournament which provides a massive amount of additional revenue. If they just relied on the pro tournament it would struggle IMO.

Our womens 7's team continues to do incredible things. Australia has been strong as well, but we thumped them yesterday, off 2-3 incredible tries. Millar in particular stands out, but to be honest, the newer players are showing some incredible strength and skill, and our defence has been very very good the last few tournaments.

Our mens team is slowly building, they aren't an dominant as they once were, but that says good things about the number of teams who have raised their level and are more competitive. There has been some commentary that we held on to a couple of our most senior players too long, but honestly, they were incredible until they retired.

What a season our AB's womens 7's are having.

An incredible come back in New York today. Down 21-5 at half time, to win 22-21 at full time.

Just amazing.

In my limited experience, ticket prices are very affordable outside of core rugby countries (SANZAR and British Isles) .  I've been to three overseas tournaments.  One in North America, one in Europe and the other in Asia.  They were very cheap, compared to NZ or Aus.  World Rugby uses Sevens as a promotional product in non-rugby nations.  Personally, as a spectator, I've gotten frustrated with Sevens.  It's just too fickle for my liking.
