The big problem for me is how rough I feel in the morning. Stiff neck, not a great sleep. As a kid that stuff doesn't seem to bother you, but as you get a bit older....

What are you sleeping on?

We moved to self inflating matts on top of proper stretchers, rather than the usual popular inflatable air beds, for just this reason. Works fine and I take my own shaped memory foam pillow too.

Whatever form this takes I encourage you to do it.  I come from an outdoors\hunting family and I do a full week in the wilderness (fly in, no cell reception) each year.  It used to just be me and my Dad, now it's Dad, me and my son + another father and son.  Making memories, most good, some bad, all memorable.

I think for camp ground I would start by renting a basic cabin.  It's a lot of stuff to buy when you are starting out and comfort is important.

I think that comfort is the most important thing when you first start. You don't need glamping but having a good sleep, decent shade and an enjoyable experience. Being uncomfortable puts lots of people off camping unnecessarily.

You don't need to spend moonbeams but you do need to think about it a bit. Begging, borrowing and stealing from friends and families normally works well.

Self inflating mattreses and stretchers are awesome. We have a queen one back in NZ and really wish we had brought it with us. They aren't available here which is annoying.

Hijacking this thread :)

After being inspired by all of the stories I've been given a tent in great condition, an older 'The Great Outdoors' Canvas tent.

It's huge,  Executive 320, 2 rooms and a sun veranda, and a bit of a PITA to setup.

Turns out it's missing a couple of pole parts. Horizontal roof poles, so I can't just buy the generic adjustable ones with a pike on top. Seems like it's not a google 'replacement poles' for this sort of tent.

Any ideas where I could get replacement pole parts? I'm in Auckland, Birkenhead if location helps.

I don't know what you have in your area, but our hood has a 'dump shop' where they have a collection of tatty tents and random poles, amongst mountains of other cr*p.

If you know what you need and find it by chance (bring in a sample?) then you can replace it for pennies.

Interesting.
I wonder if their 24 is the same as a great outdoors 24.....?

Are you able to put an arrow on an image of which poles are missing?

i do have a Dwight's Homestead Deluxe, your welcome to come over and compare poles to see if there are any that you think may match

I may take you up on that. Biggest problem is I'm actually missing 1 pole (8a) - I don't know how big it's supposed to be.

Twin needles won't be the cheapest but they can make a replacement pole section for everything.
