gzt: It's a good case for mandating 'do not retrieve your baggage' in the safety briefing.

A stick figure attempts to retrieve baggage and blocks aisle causing stick figure pile up. Bad stick figure..

Air NZ have finally added this to the current safety video. It's a single muffled sentence that's lost in the context of where it is in the video.

2 reasons:

1) Primarily, and as alluded to above, no body has thought "what will I do if I need to get off this plane in a hurry" and planned their escape route and actions.

2) People are inherently selfish. People do not self analyse. They normally do not think about how their actions inconvenience other people. A good example of this you see every time you go to a busy supermarket - trolleys parked across isles, trolley parked in the narrowest point of an isle, people browsing and standing beside their trolley, not in front or behind. People are more concerned about their own needs than the convenience (or safety) of others around them.

The good thing about this discussion is that all the smart people reading this who in future find them selves in the same situation, will now bolt for the exits, save their families lives, and leave all the dopey luggage fetchers to burn in the plane.

Then the guy they interviewed was unzipping his bag!

Conceivable that it was another bag but still!

Yeah, then you get the opposite. Many years ago, I had a spin (one and a quarter turns) in my car. During the spin, I formulated the plan that as soon as the car crashed into the bank I was going to leap out and get the kids out. So that's what I did when the car *didn't* crash.

There was a real risk of them being burned alive , yet , there they are , opening up the overhead lockers and collecting their stuff like it was just any other flight.

You have a small bag overhead with your purse (female) and passport.....you're going to grab it.

If you don't burn in the fire, but your passport does.....you may be stranded for days or weeks.

Watch people disembark...you'd be standing there in the aisle - if you're lucky enough to get into the aisle - for minutes...and there's your overhead RIGHT THERE. Of course you're going to grab your bag.

But my bag is a small, cloth backpack and it has just critical items. It's soft and it squishes.

I'd smack down anyone pulling one of those hard-box, wheelie "overnight" - shoulda-been-a-suitcase bags down. Those WOULD kill people...and wreak havoc in the aisles and on the slides.

The worst offenders are women whose bags are too big and they can't move them easily without help. I see that all the time.....especially the young pretty ones looking around for some male to move the bag for them. The worst I've seen personally in this 'genre of bad travelers' was last year in Paris at Gare du Nord - a gorgeous young woman had no problems recruiting two males - one for each of her MASSIVE and HEAVY suitcases whch she had no hope of ever moving on her own. She essentially blocked access to the stairway up to the platform until someone(s) helped her......

But that wasn't an airplane...to be fair....it was the Eurostar to London.....but it was an extreme example of the worst sort of traveller in tight spaces.

Any airline staff on board in such a situation should simply direct passengers carrying luggage one way and those without luggage another way.

Those with luggage would be directed into the business/first class cabin to wait with other like-minded, self-important folk until the remaining passengers had disembarked.

On long flights business class is about that wonderful bed. All about the bed. Go easy on people who like to sleep. :-)

Still, didn't seem that they were getting off all that quickly anyway. I'd hat to be on a plane that I had to evacuate quickly - hard enough getting off when there is no panic.

You hit that nail.....absolutely. All the broken down old farts who can barely walk...and the huge fatties who can't squeeze down the aisles.....both should be sitting in side-mounted ejector seats......it's a wonder anyone survives.
