Jetstar get a bad name.. over the last 4 year period I've flown aprox 140 domestic flights, and about 2/3rds were on Jetstar.. I've had more problem with Air NZ in that time, despite only taking half as many flights with them as with Jetstar.

Perception is reality, as they say in marketing!

Another delayed flight today by 50 minutes which the knew about 4 hours in advance from Auck to CCH.

The second delay was the worst, 5 hours I sat round in Auck domestic.

I know you get what you pay for but in this case Im barely saving anything over Air NZ.

Jetstar is becoming so unreliable its not worth risking business to save $50 a flight. And if they are profitable why does Air NZ just not take their business?

Been there done that. Never will I use them again.

I've had zero problems with Jetstar going to Auckland or Wellington. One flight from Auckland to Christchurch the flight attendants did a great job of getting a whole lot of tourists seated quickly so the plane could leave on time despite having language and culture issues to deal with. Another thing Jetstar does well is the use of the clicker things they use to count the passengers. I've had some minor delays under 15 minutes and also some flights that left a few minutes early. And on a flight from Sydney to Christchurch I was one of the first to check in and got a free upgrade to an exit row seat. I guess they like to fill those seats with people who look reasonably able early on in the check in process!

And as many others have pointed out Jetstar save us from being price gouged by Air NZ - at least on the main routes. As posters on Airline Quality point out Air NZ does not do trans Tasman all that well, really no better than Jetstar. Emirates is a whole lot better for about the same money.

I typically fly AirNZ when I have the choice but they are not immune to delays. On my past 3 international trips the last leg home from Auckland to Wellington has been delayed.

Have flown Jetstar a few times and did not have any issues with them then.

Yes Air NZ pretty much operates a LCC model on TT flights - but there is no way in the world you can compare JQ and NZ because they're very very different.

Just look at seat pitch for a 3hr flight as the first example - 29" on JQ vs 32" - 34" on most of the NZ seats with most HVC seats being 34". Even down the back is still 30" and the difference between 29" and 30" is actually very noticeable.

I've found jetstar great. I love how they make you turn up on time or bump you.

I don't really get why jetstar would be delayed more than Air NZ, given jetstar seem more efficient to me.

[edit]and people will continue to use budget airlines regardless of how much they complain cos it's show me the money!!

Jetstar face issues because they run such a tight operation. They don't have extra planes parked up in case one goes tech, and likewise because they operate aircraft with such a high utilisation if they run late then catching up can be very difficult. With some aircraft even flying out to Aussie and back overnight there have even been a couple of occasions where flights have still been running late the next day.

At the end of the day there are price sensitive people who will always opt for the cheapest option. I'd flown Ryanair a lot over the years in Europe but never will again after my experience this year. I'd far prefer to pay extra and not suffer having to spend so much time queuing and then crammed in incredibly uncomfortable seats.

I fly at least twice per week. Ocassional small delays with AirNZ and obviously weather disruptions. Same with SoundsAir.

I've never risked Jet Star simply because on the routes I fly (in/out of Nelson) they have minimal capacity so if something goes wrong you are stuffed for the day. They also fly at unusual times so doesn't really suit.
