Narita is a nice place to explore if you plan it in. It's just that if you're wanting to go elsewhere you need to travel about an hour to get to central.
The cheap option of train hopping is not too bad provided you can carry your own luggage. Last I did it there was one station hop that I needed gps for to find my way but it wasn't terribly inconvenient.
