@stinger thank you. I can see how that works for domestic. Unfortunately I dont think there are many trans-Tasman or trans-Pacific buses.

The simple reality is you're going to scr*wed. Many flights over those days and many on the 24th will be full. There simply would not be the spare capacity to get many of the people who would be affected by cancelled flights to their destination before Xmas.

 

In such a case you'd receive a full refund, and nothing else. You would have to check what your travel insurance may cover you for in the case of consequential losses.

 

There has been no strike action in recent years (or even decades) that comes anywhere close to causing the disruption that this would cause. You'd need to go back to the '80s when Cook Strait ferries went on strike at Xmas, but even then the total numbers of people affected is minimal in comparison to this.

Many airlines are reliant on Air NZ engineering staff. The impact of this is completely unknown.

The Union lodged strike notices for 3 days last week and Air NZ advised of strike action for 3 days on Friday. Mediation only began on Monday morning.

 

It seems that the media only reported the 3 days yesterday when the union actually made this clear after a vote of members as to whether they should proceed.

Any ANZ Engineers care to weigh in?

 

Here's an anonymous view from Reddit:

 

Text Wall. I work for AirNZ. They’ve been a great company for at least a decade. Things are changing here. The strike will be 2x 3 days if a settlement can’t be reached.

 

The Company have met a total of <25 hours mediation out of at least 6 weeks. That’s right, 25 hours in 6 weeks. Monday the 10th Dec, after media interviews stating they will be working to resolve the issue, ever showed up until at least 2pm when I left work. There have been many days where they simply never showed up. More where they were late.

 

Regional flights WILL be affected. The Executive are being misled by Engineering Managemnet.

 

Any ATR Departure out of Chch will be affeceted. As well as their subsequent connections.

 

ATR maintenance is carried out by Chch Staff in Chch who ARE NOT a part of regional maintenance. It pisses me off the the company are being mis-led from the inside and mis-leading the public too.

 

We DO NOT average $115,000. Or put another way, the average is $115K but the median Salary is closer to $72-75K,maybe a little higher. Definitely <$80K. However, because management are useless, a crapload if overtime is needed to release aircraft on time. Hence the high yet misleading AVERAGE Salary. Again,the median is <80K.

 

AirNZ was a company I was proud of,especially under Fyfe. Now,I’m not so sure. They are still a better employer than many but they are changing and I’m not sure for the better. The past 3 Xmas periods AirNZ have asked staff to work over the busiest days for free. That’s right, for nothing. To work and get paid zero for it. Your time was volunteering to help the company under the auspices of helping colleagues out during busy periods and gaining experience . Again, working for NOTHING. Taking away any overtime rates for cleaning staff,counter staff etc. by working for no pay. This is the company they are. Asking us to work for nothing. Mis-leading with averages not using the median. Pretending to be negotiating but no-showing and showing late when they do. They have appeared on time when they said they would but it’s been more common for them to not show or be late than be punctual. I used to sing AirNZs’ praises. I’m more cautious now. [source]

I don't think they're going to have much public support for their cause after that action.

 

 

I have seen a lot of people saying this, and I get the feeling that these workers know that they are not nurses or teachers.  They arent going for public opinion, they are going for disruption to get what they want.

 

From the very little that has been made public around what each side wants, I personally can understand why they may not want to change there penal rates.  A one off payment off $6000 odd dollars is a drop in the bucket to the savings [for the airline] and loss in income [for the staff] over the next 10 years.  In reality that 6k is probably the equivalent to a years worth of those penal rates .  Who in there right mind would give that up for 6k and 2% (inflation is 1.9% currently) pay rise!?  Especially on the back of the good profits the airline continues to make..

Friends in Japan are not impressed. Double whammy with AirNZ stopping Haneda flights earlier this year so they reschedule, right into the time period where they're having strikes. They're thinking to cut the risk and go Cathy Pacific unless something changes soon.

I am travelling with family (including a baby) from CHC to Pacific Islands (via AKL) on Sat 22nd. My worst case scenario is only getting Auckland and being stuck there.

 

Checked my travel insurance, no mention of excluding strikes or industrial action but it does say "You not taking precaution to avoid a claim after there was warning in the mass media;"

 

I booked flights, accommodation via Expedia. I will contact them as my "precaution to avoid claim".

 

What a nightmare, travelling with kids at Xmas time during a strike.

That mirrors a post on Stuff comments from an employee, her a Flight Attendant, also mentioned captains. Seems to be reduce wage cost per FTEU by holding employee numbers and increasing workload, rather than match workload with employee numbers

Air NZ is on a huge cost cutting drive at present and has been for a few years. Airline profits typically follow cycles, and it's pretty clear now that next year will see fairly significant drops from levels of the past couple of years - this mirrors what is happening globally where plenty of airlines are feeling a lot of pain right now (CX included - whether or not they even exist in their current form in a year or two will be interesting). 

 

Air NZ have indicated they're after 30m-40m in cost savings within the next 12 months.

Would this not be covered under 91Z of the Civil Aviation act?  Which would suggest that a passenger is able to claim charges they incur up to 10x the cost of the ticket

 

 

 

EDIT: hmm maybe they get out with subset (b) was made necessary by force majeure;
