@ren1316 you will have to self-isolate yourself when coming back to New Zealand, if in the near future.

Yes, aware of that. Not due to return until mid May. I am all set for working remotely. Have laptop & VPN.

That is if the conditions stay the same.

That's pretty much the point, and it gets round the nasty "ban" word....

Someone should be keeping an eye on airports (esp ZQN) to see how many of the mega-rich actually do have bolt holes down here... because if you have one 14 days isolation is a pretty small price to pay to ride out 2-3 months of hell in the Nth Hemisphere,

I can imagine the airport would be on high alert after the first confirmed case in Queenstown, however that lady flew from Auckland to Christchurch and drove from there to Queenstown, potentially stopping t every town on the way.

How contagious is it though? Trump was with someone who had it, but doesn't appear to have been infected, and he is shaking the hand of everyone, despite knowing that he shouldn't be. You could see the fear in some peoples eyes when he came up to shake their hand, and one person instead refused it and gave him an elbow bump instead. It was funny to watch.

PS. Singapore's restriction does not apply to visitors from NZ.

If you are a New Zealander, please be aware of the NZ travel advisory:

"New Zealanders should avoid all non-essential travel overseas"

https://safetravel.govt.nz/covid-19-coronavirus#overlay-context=covid-19-coronavirus

This may impact your travel insurance.

Anybody who has travel insurance has no cover for anything related to the pandemic, regardless of when they booked it.

These 14 day isolation periods are going to reduce trans-Tasman passenger numbers to nearly zero.

Those people would say completely sincerely "Fourteen days isolation: you're saying that like it's a bad thing?"
From their point of view, that's a win-win

I hope not.

I'm about to try to get back the money I spent on a package tour centred on Warbirds Over Wanaka.
The travel agent is already trying to tell me that "Day 4 Te Anau – Drive to Milford – Milford Cruise - Air Milford Flight – Queenstown – Wanaka; Day 5 Wanaka -Touring to Glendhu Bay - Wanaka lunch stop - Cardrona Hotel - Cardrona distillery tour – Wanaka; Day 6  Eco Wanaka - Possible some vintage planes fly into Wanaka regardless" is an adequate reason to keep my money.
:(

My situation is not a big deal just a hotel for 3 nights in Surfers, but on reading the SCTI policy the magic word for the travel insurers is 'pandemic'.

Probably fist pumping Worldwide from the travel insurance industry once the declaration was made.

I personally would still go, I have done most of those things and they are good if you have never been there before as you can explore new places. They said that warbirds at Wanaka would bring 50,000 people over the whole event and you can imagine in a town with a population of 8,000 people and roading not at its best at the moment, there will be quite the traffic. Just my opinion but i think it would be better to go when WAW isn’t on. You can always come next year for wheels at wanaka :)

They were discussing this on news talk zb in the weekend, and some people who phoned in said that their insurer would cover them. Not sure what the insurance company was. But I was surprised that there were some that would cover them. IMO the risk of travelling to an overseas country is too high unless there is full coverage.

Some insurers are covering medical care for covid 19. Few / none are covering travel interruptions from it.

Hardly worth starting a new thread for this, but it seems Air NZ trans Tasman flights may have already been trimmed.  I did a flight search for CHC-BNE for 22 March exactly a week on from my self aborted flight & there is no sign of NZ807, the only way of getting to Brisbane on that date is now by going through Auckland.

I read my travel insurance policy (Chubb corporate travel insurance) I bought in August 2019 completely and there is no exclusions for pandemics, "known events" etc.. My insurance broker sent me an email to say that "known events" are not covered. I spoke with them on the phone and asked if they had even read the policy which they said they had not as I said no such exclusion existed. I also cannot see anything allowing them to change the policy at their whim.

I purchased that policy based on the policy wording, if they try to change it now there would be many avenues to recover the money out of them including breach of the policy and even misrepresentations.

Check your policy.

Press Release by Air New Zealand at 11:42AM, 17 Mar 2020

Air New Zealand is significantly reducing capacity on its Tasman routes as a result of the impact of Covid-19 on travel demand.

These changes follow yesterday’s announcement on capacity reductions and will take effect from 30 March through to 30 June 2020.

These dates may change if demand reduces further. Overall, Tasman capacity will reduce by 80 percent over this period.

The following outlines the capacity changes on Tasman routes:

  • Wellington to Sydney: Reduced to two return services per week.
  • Christchurch to Sydney: Reduced to two return services per week.
  • Auckland to Sydney: Reduced to seven return services per week.
  • Auckland to Brisbane: Reduced to five return services per week.
  • Auckland to Melbourne: Reduced to seven return services per week.

All other Tasman routes are suspended from 30 March to 30 June as follows:

Auckland-Adelaide

Auckland-Cairns

Auckland-Sunshine Coast

Auckland-Coolangatta

Auckland-Perth

Christchurch-Brisbane

Christchurch-Melbourne

Christchurch-Coolangatta

Wellington-Brisbane

Wellington-Melbourne

Queenstown-Melbourne

Queenstown-Sydney

Queenstown-Brisbane

Due to the large number of schedule changes, customers are strongly encouraged to only contact the airline if they are due to fly within the next 48 hours or need immediate repatriation to New Zealand or their home country.

I expect with today's announcement, that the remaining flights will quite likely be suspended.
