There is a real possibility, not a certainty but definitely a possibility, that if you are somehow able to make your trip, it will kill you. Read some of the posts here and elsewhere about how it will kill you. It is a very unpleasant way to go. How badly do you want that break, again?

Forgot about making plans for international travel. Save your money, while you still can, and if things improve be ready to snap up a good deal.

You have somewhere between sh*tshow and no show of going and returning.

There either will be no way to get to the Philippines in June or no way to get back. Domestic travel is likely and regional travel is possible but no chance of long haul.

I have an upcoming trip to the Philippines this June 12 and hoping there will be some positive news in being able to go by then! Any ideas of when life will resume back to being normal? Do you think my trip will be viable or will I have to delay it? Need a holiday and a break from work/New Zealand and to see my family, girlfriend and friends 😊

Further to my previous comment, The lock down in Luzon has been extended.

The situation is quite worrying. Apparently (from family their and not confirmed in English language media) the food / financial support put in place so the lock down can work is costing a small fortune, and the government is fast running out of money. As such it may not be possible to extend the lock-down further.

This is concerning as the lockdown appears to be slowing rather than stopping the virus, and that all models project a massive uptick when the lock-down is lifted. This is quite concerning to us as two generations of our in laws live together in the same household, so the risk of the working age adults bringing home the virus to their parents is quite real.

Also apparently the wait to get into the supermarket can be 6 hours...

On the NZ side the government announced that from 11:59 tonight self isolation is out, and government mandated isolation in a monitored location (most likely hotel) is in, with a the possibly of arrivals needing to co-pay for that service makes travel seem very unattractive.

That is if any workable flight were running which is extremely unlikely.

Not telling you what to do, just offering an idea.

Get a refund on your flight tickets and send the money to family in the Philippines. That way when their lockdown is over the working ones don’t need to return to work and risk catching the virus and spreading it to the in-laws.

We were to be in Wuhan about now, put that off. When will we go? Lucky if its late 2021. Same applies for everywhere really. Id cancel your trip, dont guess a date, thats a waste of time, just see what happens.

Your concern is understandable and you have my sympathy. Unfortunately there may not be a lot that can be done at this time. We are in a unique situation and people all over the world are suffering, some of them quite severely. All you can do is try to provide whatever support you can, even just moral support (it is important that people not feel alone or abandoned) and keep hoping things improve, as they are sure to eventually. I wish I could offer more practical advice. I am sorry you are having to go through this. A lot of people are having a hard time through no fault of their own. It is very unfair.

You may have OP and myself confused. There is no way I am planning travel to the Philippines in the current environment.

With regards to my in laws, they are extremely fortunate to be in a position where money is not an issue.

To give a little more depth, My brother in law works in the medical field, and is considered a "front liner", and as such has been going to work during lock-down. The issue here is that he doesn't consider himself at risk as he doesn't deal with covid-19 cases. But (like many in the healthcare industry), are in that industry to help others, and are not keep to quit to despite risk to themselves while they are badly needed.

He has chosen to move from his normal residence to stay with the rest of family both to avoid being bored and because of the hassle with getting food, cooking etc.

As you imagine others see his risk exposure higher than he does, but parents in law, while concerned are not willing to ask him to go back to his apartment. Obviously causing some friction in the family.

Current situation in Philippine's is bad, but not New Your / Italy bad. My concern is that it will move towards the New Your end of the spectrum if lock-downs are lifted.

My sister in law works in the court system, and likewise is likely to want to continue in her role despite the risk. She lives with my parents in law (but has an apartment under construction that she will move to when it is completed).

While the situation sucks, I am very aware that my in laws are in a better position that many in the Philippines.

They are glad that my wife, myself and their only grandchild are in NZ where the risk is lower.
They have money to pay for their needs
They have have a big house, garden etc, with only 4 people (a lot of housing in Philippines is tiny & overcrowded. There lock-down does not permit leaving your home for exercise & fresh air like in NZ)
They have cars, so public transport shutdowns have less impact on them
By chance we got them connected with 75mbps fiber internet just prior to the lockdown. previously they had cellular internet which slowed to a crawl at peak times. This means we can now video call them whenever we want.
They can afford healthcare if they need it.

I don't have an interest in holidaying somewhere in NZ. I have my girlfriend and family to see in the Philippines, I already know what the situation is like over there. Also a lot of fake news regarding "The president will have the PNP/Military shoot violators." That's fake news, the president was referring to the leftist rebels and the media only took a part of his speech and ran with it, cutting out important details. I won't be staying in Manila, I'll be in my family's province which so far is safe. Most likely my June 12 trip might have to be postponed but I doubt it's going to be 18-24 months. That's being pessimistic. I'm personally being optimistic and hoping for at least the end of this year for everything to be okay if lock-downs are adhered to. Let's see what happens in the coming months at least and whether or not a vaccine will be released. I have around 380 annual leave hours at work and will just be using that for my trip when viable. :) Just wanted to get an idea on people's opinions of how long this whole chaos will last. I'm more of an optimist in that it will end by this year!

That amount of annual leave is a big liability for your employer, especially at the moment. Don't be surprised if they make you use some of it before your intended break, given the uncertainty about when that would even take place.

Quite the opposite, my employer wants/needs people to work during this time. They already told me it's okay to save my leave when it's viable to travel and I can keep modifying my leave dates. I'll be using it for that.

Hmm....the longer this goes on the more likely it is that you'll be paid out for your leave and forfeit any time off.
