I’ve flown the Emirates a380 economy a lot and found it good. It’s 32-34 inch pitch and 18.5 inch width. I’m a big guy (191cm tall and heavy) and haven’t had many problems with it. Their 777 economy sucks (17 inch width) but their a380 is my preferred long haul on the plane.

Fair enough. Not sure why I didn't like it much then, I try and avoid A380's in general now.

Getting on and off the a380 is painful and DXB T3 isn’t great. On the plane the 380 is still the quietest and smoothest ride around. Flying a 777 is like going back in time, IMO noise canceling headphones are optional on the a380 but essential on a 777.

Saying that I was very pleased to have Air NZ change the 787 we were scheduled to fly from NZ to Singapore to a 777. 3 3 3 on a 787 sucks big time.

My favourite plane to fly is the 787 closely followed by the Singapore Airlines 777-300.

Having said that, I am on AirNZ to New York direct in a few weeks, and it's 14 hours there and 16! on the way back. I can't see myself loving either flight, esp since the return trip has the plane running on almost fumes! I'd prefer an hour or twos margin for error lol.

I agree that the A380 is a big ole aircraft carrier in the sky, it's pretty smooth, though my Luthsuna flight was fairly bumpy for a few hours. Chicago direct to NZ was 14 and that was hard going just for the length but I was 'fairly' comfortable as I recall.

Overall I don't like flying full stop, so I guess there is that to take into account.

The Singapore 777 I flew from Singapore to NZ was ok but not great. It was overnight though so it’s always a fairly miserable experience.

The A350 is better to fly than a 787 IMO, it’s a little wider so you get a bit more room. I flew that yesterday from Singapore to DXB.

Neither are great for really long haul but that’s the future so I better get used to it.

I've never flown on an A350, it's on my list of planes to try though I try hard to fly Air NZ, and they obviously don't use them.

I prefer to fly overnight, though it's almost impossible for me to sleep on a plane, but I like arriving early AM at my destination so I can reset my clock.

Thanks everyone,

It looks like our only option because we need to soon and fast is AirNZ to Houston the United to LHR. I can book exit row seats which add another $1k to the cost :(

Can someone confirm we need ESTA visa's to transit through the US ? We'll both be travelling on UK passports until we get to Europe.

[e] Application done anyway seeing as it appears to be required for transit as well as visitors.
