I remember spending summers in Taupo in like early Jan where there was no one around.

The racing used to mop up a few beds in the town itself buy Waikrekei was still good value.

I managed to afford Manuels in winter once, we got a lakeside room upgrade; the odds of that ever happening again are slim to none and now every time I think about going back, those rooms are a good $200 more than what I paid for ours back in 2018 or so.

Their pricing model seems to be really inelastic, it's just unaffordable all the time, no matter when or what day of the week it is.

Waikreki is still good , it’s getting a bit  dated but still stunning scenery and facilities

Although a slim chance, this particular motel in question may have other reasons to Jack up the price

e.g. Expected low staff for this particular weekend / don’t want the hassle of a full house.

(probs all going to the concert)

Thats a good point , seems nuts to have extreme prices but you never know people may pay them , finished my rant now;)

If it's any consolation, it's not just Taupo. Today the wife was looking at hotel prices in Christchurch for a friend coming to stay on March 9th/10th. Unfortunately there are a lot of events on in Chch on that weekend (Snoop Dogg, Black Caps vs Sri Lanka test, NZ Surf Life Saving Champs) so hotels are asking around $1000 a night at present.

Not much you can do about it - simple supply and demand. It's why we caught the train to the Bathurst 1000 from Katoomba (70kms away) a few years ago - prices for accommodation in Bathurst and surrounds were completely out of the question. Prices in Katoomba were higher than normal but still ok.

Wellington to Auckland, this weekend average price is about $350, Wellington to Auckland in May average price is $75 for the same seat type. Thats a 500% increase.

I love it. Been going there for about ten years now, about once a year. Looking forward to our first family holiday there with my son.

Manuels! Now that brings back memories. I don't think we could ever afford to stay there but we did go in for a family dinner on occasion. What a special treat that was! Back in those days (60's/70's as a child) we would have been on our way down to the caravan park at Motuoapa (it's still there). Always looked longingly at Manuels as we went past.

We live in such a different world these days.

Still the best golf course in NZ IMHO. 18 brand new greens. Wildlife sanctuary. Doesn't rely on intimidation as the likes of Cape Kidnappers do. Just stunning.

Sadly this is routine for accommodation in NZ if there’s a big event. Taupo has this concert most years and the town packs out and motels etc crank the prices up significantly to cash in every time. But this is std in NZ, we went to gnr in Wellington and as well as cranking the prices up for accommodation significantly many places required a minimum 3 night stay at inflated prices - needless to say we drove down and back the same night.

of interest is myself and @maoriboy are in Taupo the Sunday night for fatboy slim, prices back to normal for that night as I guess the motels have made their $$ from the concert the night prior (and fatboy slim isn’t as big a draw card as the previous night).

The trick is to book your accommodation (and flights if required) as soon as the show dates are announced, but prior to tickets going on sale.

If you don't get tickets, you ring the motel and talk to them.  They are usually happy to refund when they know they can resell the room out for 2-3 times what you paid.

Meh - we'll go back to holidaying overseas. Local operators can take a running jump.

There are so many NZ houses that people have turned into airbnbs, that it is a bit surprising that there isn't more competition. but I guess there are a lot more people travelling and also international tourists coming back, that there is a lot more demand. PLus it is also peak time.

You get the same thing happening. Went to Dublin on a weekend that nothing was going to happen and all of a sudden 2 German football teams were playing a crucial for them game in Dublin and the town was sold out to German fans. Portsmouth the year before the 200th anniversary of Trafalgar and everything 4 times usual price because it was rehearsal year.

You're in for a rude awakening. It's no better overseas.
