Visits to the beaches leave me cold (literally and figuratively, as the water is too cold to swim in) and scenically speaking, the beaches are no better than those I can see every day here in Auckland or in Northland and Coromandel/Bay of Plenty, where the climate is better. 

 

I was in Dunedin on a very hot summer day just over a year ago. I went to St Kilda beach but was shocked at how cold the water was, so I went to MacAndrew Bay instead and it was lovely. There was a bit of a tidal current, but you get that in the Wellington Harbour too.

Otago museum is good, especially for the young. See the castle, but it's mostly a trip for the elderly and maybe the young. Walk around the octogen, doesn't take long. 

 

Thats where my conference is, seen this place well the last two days :)

We are planning a trip to the SI for later in the year and I was wondering about Dunedin, having never been there. I'm genuinely surprised at how little there appears to be to do there.

 

 

 

 

Where do you get that idea from? It's hard to give ideas if you don't know what people are into. Plenty of cruise ships keep coming here over the summer, so there must be something to keep the punters busy.

It's a typical NZ mid size working city. Give some ideas of what you're into and you'll get some answers. Outdoors? Restaurants? History? Sight Seeing?

No offence was intended - just an observation. When we go on our SI trip we will certainly still go there for a couple of nights because we’ve never been and would like to experience Dunedin’s look and feel. One thing that interests me is Shackleton’s brief times there back in the day.

Also recommend visiting Toitu Otago Settlers Museum as a great (free) social history museum to check out, allow about 90 mins to 2 hours. You'll find it about 1 minutes walk from the old iconic Railway Station at the bottom of Stuart Street - more info: https://www.toituosm.com/
