johno1234: A $60 1L bottle of gin will attract $21 duty and $8 GST so should be $29 cheaper or about half price at duty free.

It's DUTY free, not profit free

Huh? I expect the DF are more than just profitable. The corner bottle store is presumably making a profit despite selling gin for a similar price to the DF who notwithstanding their lease costs are pocketing the margin difference of $29 on GST and excise duty.

Oh right. Yep I don’t really understand the airport duty free business model. It’s no longer much of a discount so I never bother buying there apart from one exception: if I’m going somewhere on holiday that has high taxes on wine I’ll grab half a dozen bottles to take with me. You don’t seem to see a lot of people buying booze to cover the cost of the huge retail footprint.

You’d think the DF would offer a better price and shift a bit more volume.

to add to this when you depart Australia you can use TRS to claim back WET and GST if purchased outside of the airport you just need to allow yourself enough time to do all the proceedings

@nztim TRS? WET?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Wine Equalization Tax/Tourist refund Scheme

First one is for the large excess levies on Alcoholic products in AUS, second is much like GST return, just called TRS

I commute regularly and don't really bother with easier shopping for deals on brands I prefer, if it's not on sale one month, I find it likely is the next

There is a lot of goods significantly cheaper in Aus epically clothing and the like, TRS is well worth it.

Agreed, was specifically referencing alcohol in the above comment.  That I don't bother with claiming
