Same here, never been asked for ID on a domestic flight. When you think about it, why should you be? You don't need one on a bus or train, so why should you need one on a plane?

I didn't travel by air much prior to the 9/11 attacks, but I was under the impression the current ID rules date from the response to the 9/11 attacks? Old news now but that may have been the reason for ID checks being fairly common in those days but having become more lax these days. Or did the rules exist prior to 9/11?

You will be asked for ID if you post online trying to sell your ticket with enough details. Believe it or not, Air NZ monitors buy and sell forums for these. Fortunately, I did not sell my ticket and boarded with ID because I was asked each time. You will also be flagged if you try to make a change when calling in but don't ultimately end up taking any action. YMMV.

Update. he wasnt asked for id but his flight was cancelled coming home and he had to spend an extra night in Wellington so he is not that impressed with domestic travel.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

If said child isn’t interested in having a drivers licence then they can simply apply to get a “kiwi access card” (not sure if you are able to be under 18 as it’s more for those over 18), elsewise if under 18, there used to be photo IDs available to prove you were under 18 etc etc.

I can’t remember the name of ID, but my mate figured out they could print a few numbers, cut out the ones not needed and replace the numbers and photo and re laminate the cards (1990s, it was all laminated).
