Just as a suggestion, don't go crazy enjoying the hospitality on the Sydney - Dubai leg. They have very nice cocktails and wines but more than a couple and you'll likely have a bad sleep and arrive in DXB dehydrated and feeling disgusting.

Save it for the day flight from DXB to Manchester.

It is a fantastic experience - I have been fortunate also to enjoy the flights business class.

I do agree about not over indulging. Make sure to as much time in the business lounge as possible (in my humble opinion). When walking the business class lounge corridor, there are plenty of break out areas (or what would be normal business class lounges!), which offer showers and such. Make sure to pack a change of clothes in your hand luggage and shower up.

The amenities pack you get on the plane is especially luxurious - and if you are sweet enough, they may give you two ! The toilets on the plane offer tooth brush kits too, so don’t break into to the kit too early on the plane. Also, hand creams. Really handy for the wife’s car - big brownie point earner there (amidst the jealous).

Definitely this. I spent years flying business class for work. I once spent 224 night in hotels in one calendar year. I learned pretty quick that drinking and flying (for me) do not mix. Enjoy the food, enjoy the service and comfort but do take it easy on the alcohol.

We have actually booked our flights with Emirates through our travel agent who managed to save us $2600 on the normal fares. We did look into Qatar, but Emirates were more appealing for flight times, plus we really wanted to fly A380 which we have booked for all flights.

Any recommendations for travel agents.. I need to book flights to Lyon or Paris from Wellington for September, with a layover in Dubai on return. Looking for perceived discounts too ;)

A older family member recently flew Emirates to London and this was the deciding factor for her.
Gave some place to get up and walk to every so often to remain active and found it quite social too.

Also used the assistance option and was wheeled between planes reliably all the way there.
Ironically the whole process worked globally but fell down in Auckland airport with the shuffle from international to domestic being stress city and poor communication etc.

Unrelated but I flew Singapore Airlines business to Singapore a few years back now and it was really hit and miss.
They basically had really old planes servicing the NZ link and it was almost embarrassing. Touchscreens not working so having to use that wired control thing.
I rate them but that one was really sub par.

If I am going to Australia or The Pacific Islands, I usually do my own bookings. For long haul flights to Europe, I always use the lady outlined below. She is efficient and goes the extra mile to try and get you the best deals. Travel Advocates are part of the House of Travel Group. She does all off her work through Email or by phone, no office to visit. She is Christchurch based.

I mentioned earlier that I don't drink on flights but the bar in Emirates A380 business class is great for social interation and a place to just stretch your legs and stand up.

On one flight from Dubai to Brisbane there was one passenger who got out of his seat as soon as the seat belt light went off as we climbed out of Dubai. He didn't return to his seat until the seat belt light came back on as we started to descend into Brisbane. He spent ~14hrs in that bar. Thankfully he wasn't violent or abusive but he had to be wheeled off that plane. I don't know why they kept serving him.

Yikes. In my family members case they had cups of tea there rather than alcohol.
Has a cool souvenir where they took her photo behind the bar too.
