If I remember correctly, you get a free physical card when signing up if you're using a referral from an existing member.  That member also gets cash back or something if they refer 3 or more new members or something.  So, I'm sure someone here would be happy to give you a referral so you get the free card.

In the How to Spend With Others link my understanding is that the member you add as an Owner has to also be a Wise member and searchable, so they will still need to go through the application process. It’s a little ambiguous and needs clarifying. I had thought to use this method to add a grandchild as a way to feed some pocket money.

@inviseableman18 My method above uses the one pot of money. I just found it to be an uncomplicated method and never used the physical card except for withdrawing cash from ATM. Both virtual cards were in Apple Pay. Physical card is a back up if phone gets stolen or mislaid.

Thanks. The spend with others method would be fine if you can use a different pot of money for the group. We would both be verified anyway from having our own accounts.

Using your method do each virtual card and the physical card have a different number using the same pot of money? So essentially 3 cards and then you tally up at the end.

That could be an option but feels like a lot of admin for 6 weeks of multiple transactions per day. Also I gather the back account number you are funding it from has to be in the same name so if for example the Wise account was in my wife's name I would have to transfer money to her first for her to then send it to Wise which adds another step.

Would definitely appreciate this if anyone has a referral link.  I haven't signed up yet as still figuring out what to do.

I'm happy to do that.  Just PM me if and when you decide to pull the trigger.

Have a look at other threads on Geekzone regarding the Wise card and SIM/eSIM cards for travelling such at this one. I think the consensus is that the Wise card is well worth while getting.

@invisibleman18 Yes each card has its own number plus the name you give it. The beauty of it is if you note you are scammed you can instantly open the app to cancel the card and immediately be issued with a new one with a new number in the App. Unlike your bank card while overseas that you may not realise for a few days like my daughter who used an ATM in LA within the airport and they skimmed $8k which she only realised when she got home next days after the flight. The constant notifications each time money goes out is what I like about it.

Just sign up and try it out while still in NZ. Nothing to lose. Just don’t leave it without credit while away. Make sure you have enough in the account so you don’t fall short over a weekend. It may take a couple days over the weekend for funds to go into the account. Normally it goes in within a few hours.

You top up your Wise account from your bank. I just make a payment to the Wise account. I only keep the bank card for emergencies while away.

When you come home you can filter your statement by each card, so Johns purchases will show up separately to Mary’s and say the physical card could be the joint use one. Easy. Don’t overthink it.

I find the bank transfer to my Wise card to be quite slow and often takes 24 hours to appear. It’s the one real bugbear I have with it. Well, that and them bumping up their fees.

... and even worse over a long weekend! I stupidly transferred funds last Thursday, forgetting that Wise doesn't work the same way as standard NZ banks in terms of transferring on weekends and holidays. Money finally showed up on Tuesday, of course...

Yeah, it's just business days.  Other than that, I found the transfers reasonably quick.  You do need to think ahead a bit and/or run a high enough balance while you're away.

One little feature that I don't think Revolut has, is the virtual bank account numbers in other currencies.  It's a bit of a niche feature that a lot of people won't use, but it's unbelievably helpful in some cases.  e.g. we bought tickets to a hockey game in Vancouver, but then realised we wouldn't be able to make it to the game.  I could resell the tickets through the official Ticketmaster Canada website, but the proceeds needed to be transferred to a Canadian bank account.  E voila, a fully functioning local account number with all correct codes etc and the $CAD went straight into our Wise account to spend later on the trip.

Also, I don't just use our Wise for travel either.  I now use it for purchases off foreign currency websites, like Amazon etc.  The savings over Credit Card FX rates and fees starts to add up.  Noting, that sometimes Credit Card purchase protection is preferable.

Yep they are UK based iirc so will not do transfers on holidays. On a normal day I usually get transfers in about 4 hrs.

Wise is one of the better options here because our banks don’t really compete whereas if you were in aussie you’d have more options for travel cards.

From ASB -> Wise weekends used to be an issue, but these days it seldom takes more than an hour.

Hope this is correct however it may not be a delay from ASB but from Wise UK weekends that cause a delay. While a Newbie I was adding a few hundred at a time and got trapped by realising that I only had $120 left on a Friday morning. Transferred from ASB to Wise and it arrived Tuesday. Meanwhile I had organised to shout the whole family dinner on Saturday and had to use another card which I prayed would be accepted.

Since then I add a much larger amount to Wise than will be needed before leaving NZ and just leave the balance in the account until next trip or spend it when back in NZ.

Who needs the angst while away and imagine if you forgot to inform the bank you were headed overseas and they block your out of ordinary transaction. Or worse your roaming doesn’t work for 2FA or a dozen other Murphy glitches. Not worth the risk.

Wise allows full download of data in Excel format which makes this a simple job.

I keep the balance in the account to a level that I am likely to need in a few days. The rest of my funds are stored in a Wise Jar, as the Jar cannot be accessed by the Debit card. This limits the amount that can be lost if the card is stolen/skimmed. You can instantly transfer funds from your Jar to your Balance as needed. See What are Jars and how can I keep money in them? | Wise Help Centre.

I also drop the rather high default daily/monthly spend Limits for each card. Very easy to change the limit when you need a big spend. The app is pretty powerful for this type of thing.

Thanks for all the tips everyone.

Another question without starting a new topic - is it best to convert to all currencies needed now, or just leave in NZD and choose to pay in local currency each time? We'll need a few currencies (Pound, Euro, Swiss) so for what is left in one will need to be transferred to another once finished using that currency. Does keeping it all in NZD work out better than transferring to Euro, then again to Pound once finished with Euro?
