I do find it odd that we can gift APD's between us but not her upgrades. As far as Air NZ are concerned, it's not costing them more money so why would they care? It seems an odd restriction. She was on course to get Elite this year but then changed contracts from Auckland to Wellington so rarely needs to fly now, whereas she was flying up and down every week.

Gifting RU's is limited to Elite's.

Other being able to gift RU's would be a nightmare - you'd go from a low to moderate RU redemption (remember lots of people never use their upgrades) to suddenly having somewhere in the vicinity of 200,000 RU's potentially being redeemed. Getting RU's cleared can be difficult enough now, I even had a friend flying back from Singapore a couple of weeks ago that had 8 people at the gate still hoping for RU's to clear into BP. When you've only got 18 seats in total it's very clear they're not all going to clear.

They are an odd thing though because I suspect more people fly with a partner than alone, so who is going to want to be split up?!

Most people flying together are on the same PNR - and if you lodge a OneUp it has to be for both people on the PNR.

If you lodge an APD Upgrade or RU it can be for one, or both pax.

Not if the Pax lodging the RU is not Elite. RU can only be for the Gold member even if travelling together. We asked Air NZ explicitly on several occasions.

Correct - if both people are Gold or silver they can only lodge their own RU. It's only Elite's who can gift RU's to another pax on the same PNR. You can however lodge RU's independently of each other if you're Gold or Silver, whereas for a OneUp both pax need to apply.

It's incredibly common for pax not to fly together. I've seen so many cases of a couple split between cabins, much of it by choice.

Also check what plane you're flying on - you may not find it worth it if it's the comfort you're after. Flying back UK to Hong Kong to Auckland last year premium economy and economy seating seemed identical (we were in Premium) on the Hong Kong - Auckland rout when we were switched to an older plane (sorry, can't remember what it was). You should be able to find out the specifics online as to what plane they're using.

Flying back UK to Hong Kong to Auckland last year premium economy and economy seating seemed identical (we were in Premium) on the Hong Kong - Auckland rout when we were switched to an older plane (sorry, can't remember what it was). You should be able to find out the specifics online as to what plane they're using.

This has not been the case for nearly a year now since the last 77E had it's refit in around August.

cb1: My wife was successful with $360 on Wednesday night. The minimum is $350. Hope you're not flying this Friday night as you'll be bidding against me!

My bid of $360 was successful, but didn't find out until about 10 hours before I flew after receiving an email mid-week saying they couldn't confirm. However, our bid of $360 each for return flight from Vancouver to Auckland travelling together wasn't accepted.

They also codeshare with Air NZ so depending which way you go sometimes end up to half the flights are Air NZ anyway! I picked up a biz seat for slightly less than Air NZ premier economy.

My bid was accepted today - 7 days before flying - and my wife's Gold 'free' upgrade was also confirmed today.

Hers was accepted on both sectors of her flight - AUK-LAX then LAX-LHR as well, so she is pleased about that.

Looking forward to a comfortable flight for a change! ;-) The plane we are on still has the excellent Space Seats, so that's going to be good.

As a slight aside, I looked at some video of the Space Seat cabins (nice) and the new PE cabins on the Dreamliner.

You'd expect the new ones to be better than the old ones, wouldn't you?

I flew cathay's business a month ago from Auckland to Hong Kong and I thought it was pretty average. A dated plane, herringbone like air New Zealand but it seemed like thinner compartments, and the general state of the plane was untidy. Crumbs all over my seat.

I then flew Swiss to Zurich on one of their new 777-300's. One of my new favourites. A really good layout, very scandi look, large IFE screen, and lots and lots of cleverly thought out storage space.

Whether they're better depends entirely on your view. Many people don't like the Spaceseat, and that's part of the reason why they're being scrapped.

As a child we often flew the then Swissair to Geneva on skiing holidays. Our favourite part was the fact that instead of dull boiled sweets they handed out Swiss chocolate with nice Alpine photos on the wrappers!

"Air NZ program director Kerry Reeves said the primary reason the new seats had been chosen rather than the Spaceseat was the routes being flown by the Dreamliner.

"This aircraft is replacing 767s on [trans-Tasman] and Asian flying," he said. "And premium economy is either a product that we don't sell on short haul or in the Asian market, it is a very emerging product. That market doesn't value the Spaceseat space and experience you get. So therefore we thought we needed to develop something more appropriate to that market."

But he also added the Spaceseat appeared to have been "ahead of its time" and many passengers had been confused about how to use it properly. He said an in-flight video would be introduced in addition to a card already in place."

More like we could not get enough in the cabin/there was not enough blue sky between Spaceseat and Business.

If their passengers were "confused about how to use it properly" then they need to stop selling tickets to idiots. It's a seat, not the cockpit of an F22!
