Does anyone have a feel how much would be a reasonable bid to upgrade Economy to Premium on the Auckland/LA flight to stand a reasonable chance of success?

Based on experience $300-$400/seat worth a shot. There is a meter which tells likely success and have had good luck if towards middle. Day of week for travel etc also matter but definitely worth a shot.

Happy bidding.

My wife was successful with $360 on Wednesday night. The minimum is $350. Hope you're not flying this Friday night as you'll be bidding against me!

Where does one "bid" for these upgrades? I'm flying in November.

$500 is 'weak' on the scale.

Log on to your Air NZ account and manage the booking - you will see a tab that says "Request Upgrade".

Used to be that One Up could only be paid for with Airpoints Dollars but I see there was a button allowing you to use normal payment so I guess they decided the restriction was losing them money...!

Login to Air NZ website with your airpoints login, click on see my bookings, on the right hand side under "Manage this booking", click on "Request upgrade". Not sure if you do it through the Air NZ app. Available up to 7 days before your flight. and they let you know before you fly.

I've heard about a new app Seatfrog which allows you to bid on the day of your flight for any airline.

Why wait 5 months? Surely you'd just lodge it now?

There are plenty of catches to the OneUp system and certainly no guarantee at all that seats will clear on any particular route, in particular flights to North America which are very full in premium cabins. OneUp sits below RU's and Elite APD upgrades so you basically need to have luck on your side to get one to clear with no status.

The price you may need to pay is largely an irrelevant figure - because it doesn't matter how high or low this is, if space isn't available the upgrade won't clear. There is a massive thread on FT with hundreds of people who have submitted data.

If you want an upgrade to clear your best bet if to find a friend who's Elite to gift you an APD upgrade for $220

Because I read something wrong. I thought cb1's post said 7 days before your flight, but I re-read, and see it says up to 7 days before your flight.

But first, must book flights!

Sadly my wife it's only Gold, not Elite, so cannot gift her upgrades.

We'd intended to OU together but she had to amend her flight plan due to the MIL ending up in hospital so she wants to pop over to the UK and see her.

This means she will now transit at LAX whereas I will get off and enter the US. She will then join me 5 days later in NY.

This broke our joined booking. She has recognition upgrades to use but I'm now stuck with OU without the uplift benefit her Gold status would have got us if we were doing it together.
