Re non closed systems

 

How fast is the "higher" pressure oxygen coming out? 

 

Let's say you inhale a 1L breath. How fast does that 1L get inhaled? Probably 1s.

 

The oxygen equipment will need to be flowing at 60L per minute* for all that 1s, when you take a breath, if the mouth and nose is not sealed into a closed system.

Aviation Security screening is mostly for show, there are still checks that the airlines will do in the background when you buy a ticket.

 



I flew to Australia yesterday and the security theatre was even more intrusive. You had to remove your phone and iPad from cases. My work iPad is in a keyboard case and that was treated as a laptop during descent.

Talking to my colleagues from other parts of Australia last night it was even worse domestically, checked luggage was searched and the delays were incredible.

depends on what its set at, between 1 and 4 LPM from what i can find. but remember at 100% 02 you are getting 500% your normal volume of 02 per breath.

 

but i suspect most are closed systems now so a moot point, it comes out based on demand.

 

the average human breaths 12-20 breaths per minute with a volume of about .5L

 

either way they are designed so the person wearing it wont inhale cabin air when set to the 100% mode. only when using the normal mode will the air in the mask be mixed with cabin air

Actually, you're getting the same volume, but all of it is O2. I think you meant that you're getting 500% your normal number of oxygen molecules of O2 per breath.

 

If you're breathing pure oxygen and you aren't in a pressurised environment and you're at 25,000ft, then you're only getting 500% * 0.3bar = 150% more oxygen molecules than normal.
