Laws could be made to make it illegal to own or use a drone for recreational use.  Drones could be bought and used by people such as emergency services, lifeguards at beaches, police, news websites, tv etc.

Give people some time to surrender their drones & reimburse the purchase price.  Some professional youtubers would scream and lose some views but tough!  Do people going on holiday really need to take drone footage of their damned beach & hotel?  Would not having a drone actually ruin anyone's life?

I guess you'll need to apply this to model aircraft as well?

Once the dust settles, I'm pretty certain drone ownership is going to become a lot more difficult and less enjoyable (eg. compulsory registration, licences to fly, even tougher restrictions on areas to fly).

That's quite a blow against personal freedom you want to strike! Problem is, you can replace "drone" with almost anything some minority dislikes - motorbike, jetski, firearm, two way radio, smartphone - and sooner or later we're all sheep in a totalitarian state
I'll keep my drones and my personal freedom thanks.

Yes, perhaps you are right.  Maybe because the technology is relatively new I thought it could be done away with.  Maybe a better trade-off between personal freedoms and public safety would be to increase the jail terms for misuse to say a maximum of 15 years for the worst offences.  At the same time try to develop technological solutions to make it easier to identify location of the drones, ownership, etc.

As you say many things can be a threat.   If you watch youtube videos of planes landing at Gatwick you'll see there is a lot of woodland areas even small ponds and lakes close to the airport.  Some nutter with a rife could have caused havoc just as easily but would have been caught sooner (maybe!).  Of course it seems highly likely that the eco-terrorists only wanted to shut down Gatwick not bring down a plane with a drone.

The thing is, it's near impossible for a single person to cause chaos in the lives of over 100,000 people with any combination of motorbike, jetski, firearm, two way radio or a smartphone. So, I'm ok with those things, but I'm for regulating your drone.

I know it's trivial, but a rifle bringing down a plane would take a high degree of skill and equipment, unless it was an extremely lucky shot. It would certainly reduce the "person of interest" list substantially.

The rifle would probably be loud, somewhat nearby, and there's the muzzle flash. Of course, there's ways to reduce these affects.

Of course the rifle and the rifleman would be likely be next to each other.

While a drone can cause havoc by a remote operator, regarding firearms sentry guns with a camera are usually fixed place.

The shot direction is very directional, and would point like an arrow back to the source, making a search much easier. Ironically a drone could catch a rifleman pretty easily.

The Iranians can take down a US military drone but the Brits can’t take down a civilian drone. Baaah.

Think they’re deliberately not taking it down so can make tougher drone laws.

I have no problem with controls and stiff penalties, but that's not what was proposed - a ban was.

I also think the authorities should have an effective way of countering drones such as this, that is safe in a populous environment.  Sure, the Iranians took down a US drone but I dare say they couldn't give a stuff if they killed a few civilians in the process

I also think that while we need rules, they need to be balanced.  For instance, the whole of Lake Taupo is currently classed as an aerodrome, because there is one float plane based at the northern end that makes a few flights a day.  So, the "no flying within 4km of an aerodrome" means you can't fly a drone anywhere near Lake Taupo.  Or, even worse, people get used to breaking the rules which although safe to do in this case, is very dangerous in others.

I heard the max penalty in the UK is 5 years in the slammer and I think they'll be looking at that given the nature of the offending

Maybe they could go for "claim of right" defence like those Waihopai hippies did a few years ago.  They could say they had to stop flights to save the polar bears

Take it down when over empty part of airport, it buzzed the control tower so it came into the airport area itself.

I don't know how advanced techs are at moment but laser, radio or GPS jamming,  or even use some sort of parachute net and catch it in that.

Oh. Two people arrested. It's officially a conspiracy now! I'm disappointed it's not some stereotypical csi nerd perp in a basement with two joysticks, 20 screens and half eaten pizza..

Well, it could be two nerds in a basement, two joysticks 20 screens and two half eaten pizzas.

I don't care about age or motivation, I hope they get the book thrown at them.

Yeah, I added the light fine for effect! I want huge damages and not 5 bucks a week.
