Why do you uber somewhere when you can get public transport for cheaper?

Why do you buy takeaways instead of cooking it yourself?

Because it's easy and convenient.

We went to the F1 in Melbourne recently - booked it all as a package. It included the F1 tickets and the flights, airport transfers, insurance etc.

Sure I could have booked all that myself - it would't have even been that hard.  But it was worth the additional money, and saving of my time, to pay someone else who's booked it 500 times before to do it.  It's also nice to have a single point of contact when things go wrong - we had a few minor travel problems while away - I had a mobile number I could call and they sorted it out pretty much on the phone.  Good luck with that when you've booked everything through webjet.

Everyone does it - removes a drain on their limited time in exchange for parting with some of their money.

That’s a great way to look at it
For me, I usually cook instead of getting takeaway because I quite enjoy the process, I get a better product and I save a bunch of money. The exact same reasons apply to booking travel.
Example, currently planning a European trip and last night spent an enjoyable hour or so researching nice areas to stay in a city and then choosing a nice place to stay on AirBnB.

I guess pricing is that way because they're discounting the AUK-SFO because there's more people wanting to fly the other way. Dunno.

Wait, who would want to fly from San Francisco to Alakanuk, Alaska?

(Auckland's ICAO airport code is AKL, not AUK)

Nope, AKL is the IATA code. The ICAO code is NZAA

Gah, I always get those darned things backwards. The sentiment stands though!

I've never really understood why travel agencies still exist.. I mean sure i can understand why they existed pre internet, but now?

A friend travelled to Europe last year; on the day of her flight, she became ill enough to not be able to take the flights with her husband. Their travel agent got her on new flights the next day, free of charge.

So they just contacted the travel agent, told them the situation, then left the travel agent to rearrange everything.
Beats being on hold for hours to the airlines to try and sort this out yourselves, I guess.

I used FC for a trip recently to Japan. You can drop the captains pack for sure. Just make sure you have travel insurance for everyone and donate some money to trees that count (if you're really concerned about your carbon mileage)

For a larger group like that, it'd almost be worth the agent's fees for any unforeseen changes / issues but $1K is a big chunk.
