With ICU beds the issue is staffing. The facility is pritty much useless if we don't have people to operate it. Auckland had to scramble ICU staff from the rest of the country for this small outbreak...

Exactly. ICU is 1:1 Nurse patient ratio from what I understand. There isn't really an abundance of ICU nurses in NZ, or the global market for that matter.

Has anyone booked any long haul travel for mid 2022?

I had a look at travel insurance and while most do include COVID provisons it does say the countries you travel to must not be listed under the "do not travel" banner on the NZ Safe Travel site.

Exactly - I have refundable overseas bookings for mid next year - but am holding off the airfares until this is resolved - hopefully before the end of the year.

of all the 7 billion people in the world we can't attract 10 icu doctors and 100 icu nurse to a country with level 2 lifestyle. So sad.

At the risk of dealing the thread, right now the way they are treating migrants, no. Who wants to relocate to a level 2 lifestyle and risk their family not being allowed in and having no certain pathway to be allowed to stay. The community that is already here is fed up with of being included in the team of 5 million when it suits and then ignored when their request to stay is stuck in a 26 month long queue and their child turns 18 and can't get a job or study due to visa issues, or their family isn't welcome to join them despite having the visas in place pre covid,. Then there's all those that have no assurance on being allowed to even apply to stay despite that being an option they qualified for when uprooting their lives. Lots of these people are choosing to leave the luxury of level 2 they are living in over how they are being treated, so I can't see it being that appealing to move here until that changes.

We got very lucky and covid actually got immigration moving to see our application last year and we were granted residency after 20 months in limbo. We are grateful to be here throughout all this and had a baby last year, compared to our friends the experience was so much better than how the NHS is functioning, but it would be great for family to actually meet her before she's too old.

That said no matter the state of international travel we aren't going anywhere until at least next October. If we aren't in the country next September all that effort to get residency goes down the toilet and we are left owning a house we can't live in. It's just not worth risking the rules changing while we are out the country until we can get our permanent residency that doesn't expire if we leave the country after a set date. The baby can come back but we'd be stuffed.

You'd me nuts to book anything for the northern hemisphere summer. There's a long way to go before there's any ability to plan travel.

I'm not concerned about Europe. I'm more concerned about NZ being a hermit nation for another year.

If you are fully vaccinated it looks like the UK is open to NZ. No test, no isolation, no fuss.

This week. Next week it could well be a different story.

I think the UK has been gung ho and there's little chance they will lockdown again thanks to high vac rates and the number with previous infections.

Plus it is unlikely NZ arrivals would been considered "high risk of COVID". AU with 1500+ cases a day is still considered low risk to the UK.

My opinion, that's not a good way to be. I personally don't want to "live with the virus" - I guess I'm used to NZ having a low number of cases and therefore a low number of deaths, as well as low risk. I wouldn't even look at going to the US or the UK (for example) at the moment. I'm even put off going to Australia.

When vaccines are approved for under 12s, then under 5s, I see no reason not to travel with my family. I think under 12s will be approved by Nov, and younger ones in the new year.

So many other diseases can be fatal but we don't lock ourselves down, we get vaccinated.

Lias:

I can't see international travel going back to how it was pre pandemic for a very very long, if ever. We've already seen how different Delta is with it's increased transmissibility and mortality. If a highly transmissible variant with a mortality rates like SARS or MERS evolves (both other coronavirus outbreaks) thinks will change dramatically again. Quite apart from the actual medical and pandemic risks, I think the impact of the pandemic on airlines, cruise lines, hotels and other travel/tourism related businesses is going to have ripples for a very long time.

My 2 cents.

The best thing that could happen right now would be a emergence of a new variant that was more transmissible than delta, but had a very low hospitalisation rate, a very low fatality rate and gave you a high degree of immunity to other variants.

The next best thing might be a vaccine that as well and reducing severe outcomes, was also much better at stopping transmission. Perhaps we could then let returning travellers self isolate or have a much reduced stay in MIQ.

If we introduced self isolation rules right now, we'd be expecting the same people who are flocking to Mission bay on a sunny day, to self isolate after their overseas trip and we can guess the outcome.

We have a cruised booked out of San Francisco to Barcelona and another 6 weeks later from Barcelona to Singapore . The 6 weeks in between we want to spend in the Balkans and Eastern Europ.  The first cruise may not happen (if the Japan cruise  season next year doesn't happen the ship will be in the wrong place)  - in which case we'll fly to Istanbul and overland back to Europe.

Planning on being away 4 months

About 2 months assuming the vaccine roll out continues as it is and we get to  a reasonable %.  This has already been quite clearly indicated by the government.
