A Taser is called a gun as are Spud Guns, Grease Guns, Air Guns and my arms in my dreams.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

@Eva888 please stop saying shot, its not a gun its a tazer.

say he was tazed 5 times or 5 seconds or what ever but not "shot" please.

it appears tazers came out because he was starting to struggle putting officers in a position of being harmed. Police follow a "Force Continuum" of escalating force. and if they give you a threat, "sir i need you to stand up and get off the plane or ill taze you" you get one more warning then you get tazed. if you threaten them with force (usually one level above their level) you are suppose to follow through unless the situation de-escalates.

If you have been on a plane you will know there is no way 4-5 cops would be able to get close enough to handcuff him especially if he started to struggle.

The simple fact of the matter is he chose not to comply with orders of multiple airline staff and this was the end result.

According to Wikipedia, the first Taser was a gun. It is also spelled with an S, not a Z. The name is an acronym, derived from a series of boy's action novels from the early 20th century. The early books were badly written, saturated with the racism and prejudices of the time, incredibly ignorant, and enormously popular. TASER stands for Thomas A. Swift, the hero of the books, plus Electric Rifle.

All the stewardess had to do was tell him that the front part of the plane he was now sitting in was not going to his destination, but to Kiev. He would have stood up again immediately and taken his old seat. 😆

Aussie police doing their job. No you dont have the right to just sit anywhere on the plane. Sounds to me like this guy was a menace, was holding up the entire plane, refused to return to his seat, and refused to disembark the plane either. Plenty of warnings were given and it looks like the taser was the absolute last resort. He should have booked his own seats like the rest of us have to do.

As somebody that flies often between Wellington and Brisbane, nothing irritates me more than some self entitled people like this.

Oh, and if you think this would not have happened on Air New Zealand or Singapore Airlines, boy are you mistaken.

Dingbatt:

I’ve watched the Aussie news on this a couple of times. The passenger claimed he “had done nothing wrong”, but have you ever heard the announcement “stow your cabin baggage, either in the overhead locker, or under the seat in front of you. Take your allocated seat….”

Apart from weight and balance considerations there are also rows where families with infants on laps aren’t seated. This can be because they are exit rows or the configuration of the emergency oxygen masks is such that there isn’t a spare mask for an infant above that row. I don’t know if that is relevant in this instance (it definitely wasn’t an exit row - I checked).

It's most likely that the guy's wife and baby were sitting in the seat allocated to them. Colour has been criticised as a reason but it's probably the only reason the cabin attendants noticed that the husband had swapped with the passenger originally allocated the seat alongside his wife. Weight, balance and infant position are red herrings.

The last time I flew anywhere my boarding pass was briefly sighted as I entered the cabin but unless there were 2 people trying to sit in the same seat there was no other check. I would be surprised if any flight didn't have informal window/aisle swaps. If the worst happens everyone will be everywhere all at once.

While this is a bit off topic, I believe the preferred term in the industry is "Flight Attendant". The term "Flight Stewardess" was retired as it gained negative connotations that the woman performing the task was simply there to act as eye candy for the male passengers. Cynically, it doesn't surprise me that Defence holds onto a relic of the past like that.

Hence my comment. My post was about there being more to loading an aircraft than assigning bums to seats.

Don't be so prickly. I was merely providing some interesting information on the origin of the name. It's not like I pedantically proclaimed "@Eva888 please stop saying shot, its not a gun its a tazer."

Airlines also don’t have

Navigators

Air Electronics Operators/Air Warfare Officers

Air Loadmasters

Helicopter Crewmen

Flight Engineers (except in really old airliners)

whereas the RNZAF does.

It was a gentle jibe, hence the emoji.

The article indicated the plane left an hour late, so he got plenty of warning.
There would have been lots of repeated requests and warnings of what the escalation will be.

The path of escalation to Pilot re calling on security and such.

A lot would have transpired before security and Police, and um you don't take a hint ?

It's not like Police quietly sneak up on you and go Tazer, Hah got you !

Plus where is your sense of community, you are scaring and holding everyone else up.

Start physically struggling with Police anywhere and you know things are going to go bad.
Do you really think you are flying once you refuse instruction from Police.

Once they tell you the next step is physical force, and you are just gonna grab your seat tighter ?

Like the persecution Sov Cits complain of, you bought it on yourself.

Just do what sane people do.
You can just note everything, roast them on social media after the flight.
Its a few hours, you get to your destination, its not the end of the world.

No offence taken. Who can keep up with the daily changes to language and what is and isn’t permissible/acceptable.

No doubt the facts will change until it gets to court. He was wrong to think he could argue with Jetstar but it started with the airline. Apparently jetstar changed the aircraft flying the route and that changed the seating available. He swapped seats with another passenger to sit by his wife and that was initially ok'd by an attendant. The attendant then came back saying he had to move. Other passengers were surprised how quickly it went from discussion to Police. Southwest Air.ines in US, the largest low cost airline operates without assigned seats so that isn't "the big deal" that some claim.

I recall years ago Bob Jones stubbornly refused to watch the flight safety spiel and instead continued to do whatever it was he was doing.   The flight crew removed him and when interviewed he fully admitted it was his own dumb fault and none of the flight crew had done a single thing wrong.   At least he owned his own decision, unlike this guy.

Speaking of Bob Jones, he famously punched a reporter in the face when disturbed while fishing, and was fined $1000.  In court he asked the judge if he paid $2000 could he do it again.  lol
