This week. Next week it could well be a different story.

I think the UK has been gung ho and there's little chance they will lockdown again thanks to high vac rates and the number with previous infections.

Plus it is unlikely NZ arrivals would been considered "high risk of COVID". AU with 1500+ cases a day is still considered low risk to the UK.

Rules have changed very regularly for different destinations. In a years time NZ could be going through the worst of the pandemic and other countries placing it on a no travel list. It's almost impossible to say what will happen in mid 2022, it will depend on the circumstances of each country at the time. Restrictions get turned on and off depending on hospital loadings and case numbers.

I don't live in NZ, I'm in the Middle East so have a slightly different perspective.

You'd me nuts to book anything for the northern hemisphere summer. There's a long way to go before there's any ability to plan travel.

About 2 months assuming the vaccine roll out continues as it is and we get to  a reasonable %.  This has already been quite clearly indicated by the government.

That doesn't mean you can plan with any certainty. It just means you may be able to get in or out of NZ.

For example you still can't travel from Europe to the US. Things will remain very uncertain for the next couple of years.

Since when  was there certainty around travel?  Maybe there was an illusion of such in the last couple of decades - but that was all it was. I've been travelling for 40 odd years - I tend to have a plan and then see what happens.  Its very common for borders to open and shut  - the last time I spent a lot of time in Europe a lot of countries were hard to get to (in the 80s)  - much harder than they are now.

US is  reopening to Europe from November - but they were never closed to those travelling from Europe on an NZ passport

heavenlywild: If the govt can hand out billions with short notice, why can't they build fit for purpose MiQ facilities and add more ICU beds? They wouldn't cost even a billion.

Sigh. Anyway, get jabbed, and get us reconnected to the world.

Adding an ICU bed isn't as simple as a bit of hardware. The staff are very highly trained and that takes considerable time. We also have a chronic shortage of staff throughout the entire health system.

So what if we paid one ICU staff member 500k a year? I'm sure people will come. 500k in the greater scheme of things is nothing.

500k x 100 people = 50 million. A drop in the bucket.

Thanks to Sir John Key's opinion piece over the weekend, the govt will no doubt be under further pressure to give us a timeline to reopen the borders.

Soon we will have that date and we can start planning our travels.

The pressure will only become more intense the closer Australia gets to 80% (double dose) and  reopen its borders,

Although the NZ PM is going to be treading a potentially dangerous path , as it now clear that the target for opening is dependant on over 90% of Pasifika and Maori being fully vaxxed

- If those groups don't get there ( or are not close) but other groups do... The government will have a very big political risk on its hand ...

It will take the Aussies to open up before forcing Ardern's hand. The UK is opening up in October to fully vaccinated travellers from "green" countries. All this eventually will force the govt to stop sitting on their hands.

Overall it's good news other countries are doing the pushing for us, albeit it's not ideal.

Each icu bed requires 5 nurses plus a certain amount of doctor.

I've seen some modelling that we would need 150 extra icu beds so 750 nurses plus slack for burn out. Plus consultant doctors and registrars.

Are we going to continue elective surgery too ? If we accept elective non cancer surgery is to stop then could redeploy some of anaesthetists and recovery nurses.

One option is to open covid units similar to polio/tb units where all they treat are those diseases which would enable more rapid accumulation of skills. Those that develope major complications such as multichannel failure or need for invasive ventilation would be transfered to classic icu units.

Where to physically locate this units would be an issue. Do we have space to build these rapid covid units? Ideally on same site as hospital but perhaps on a nearby sports field but power and water infrastructure needed.

If you build inside existing hospital ward then we would have to accept the type of care those wards currently provide wouldnt happen.

How is everyone feeling about travel prospects next year, namely the ability to come back into the country without MiQ?

We're going. I can work from overseas and run my own company, my partner is retired.  I feel like we've wasted nearly 2 years in limbo and I'm out of patience.  We're fully vaccinated, and are happy to get booster shots every  month or 2 - wherever we end up. The currently plant is cruising to Europe ex the USA and spend a few months there and then cruising back to Singapore.

If for whatever reason we can't return by next October I'm totally prepared to live overseas for a while.  My only concern is how/if we can get travel insurance (not for Covid - think the risk of that is vanishingly small given our precautions) - for everything else. My partner has pre-existing conditions so if we cant' get insurance for the USA we'll have to redo the trip dropping the USA part.

My partner and I are planning on going back to our home country for a couple of months in April 2022. I need to go, my mom passed away because of COVID and my dad and brother need my support. I'll be taking 30 days of leave and working from there for another 2 or 3 months.

I'm only a PR here in NZ, so if I stay longer than 4 months overseas I'll delay my citizenship, but that's something I'm willing to do if I need to.

It sounds like more are prepared to travel next year based on the replies and also what I am hearing on the radio.

I am thinking of travelling to Europe for a holiday in September / October. To be honest if we still have MiQ at that stage then as a country we should be worried! I could be wrong, I just hope for everyone I am not.

I completely agree with you - the only justification would be basically a totally new strain which  didn't respond to vaccines - and that seems unlikely at this point
