SheriffNZ:

While I think you're correct in that the winter spike isn't as bad as modeled, I also think an element of this is people not reporting positive tests.

But the question is "has  the rate of under reporting changed over time"... the assumption is that its always been underreported

As mentioned by others the declines in Hospitalisations and waste water tends to indicate that there is a reduction occuring

Whether the  daily number is correct isn't at issue, its whether the reported daily number is less than it was reported a week/month ago,

Which it appears to be..

Up to June it was 90 percent  doing 1 and 75 percent doing both

I suspect it will likely be lower now

Ah I see, when I came back on the 10th of July we got the tests and took them. But never got an email and then got a serious follow up text from Ministry of Health on day 6. Then called them and had a very pleasant conversations where I let them know about both my wife and I testing negative.

Seems like the system itself might be a little wonky. And also feel like they could have been better with their communication about the tests and how to report the results.

I don't know anyone who has tested positive recently who would willingly report the fact.

We had relatives here recently from OZ and they got constant reminders until the completed their tests.

We've just got back and my wife got a reminder for day 0/1 as the submission was incomplete

Reporting positive means you can't leave the country because you must self-isolate - a requirement many other countries are abandoning - even if it means you cannot leave the country - so not really surprising.

Reporting if you are sick and staying away from travelling and mingling with others when you are sick is the decent and right thing to do.

You never know how Covid could affect the people you would spread it to.

I agree in principle. However that's not how everyone else will see it. Being stuck in a country you don't live away from your home and support circle is an understandably big ask. It isn't surprising that people will lie about their COVID status so they can get back home.

To be honest though, it's still pointless. As I previously mentioned, flights are still full of sick people coughing and choking. It not being COVID is irrelevant, it still risks getting other people sick. Airlines don't care though, long as it isn't COVID.

These are locals who aren't planning on travelling. Most don't bother reporting any more

I'm heading to Singapore next Wednesday for work. Not looking forward to the whole experience if I'm honest but its something that I'll have to prepare myself for.
