Geektastic:

We were looking at flights to UK/Europe for next year and to be honest we considered this route for all of 30 seconds before picking a 4 day stop in Singapore each way instead. 17 hours just does not appeal to me, even if someone else was paying for Business. Maybe in an Emirates Suite or something but nothing less.

I don’t find any significant difference between 13 hours (Singapore to London) and 17 hours. Once a flight goes past 10 hours it’s all the same to me.

There’s no “good” way to get to Europe from NZ. It’s two moderately long legs or one big one and a shorter one. It’s all fairly miserable. Through Bali was probably the most bearable way before Covid but Emirates 777 eco isn’t great.

The 777 is my least favourite plane of the current options.

Personally I’d find a big difference. 4 or 5 extra hours even in PE (about as far up the plane as I’m likely to be if using my own money!) is still a long time which I could have spent asleep in a hotel bed!

The sooner we get back to supersonic travel the better.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

When I went to UK 5yrs ago we much preferred the long 777 leg to Qatar than the 787 to UK. 787 felt cramped and noisy, with worse inflight entertainment even though the system was newer than the 777.

I'm on today's NZ1 in PE, unless some miracle happens and my upgrade comes through.

Geektastic:

I'm struggling to come up with a reason why I would take this flight.

I can see the advantage if I was heading for LHR: land in New York with only a relatively short transatlantic hop (could have been very short indeed if Concorde still flew!) but to be honest it looks very marginal from a reliability pov as a passenger. I think I would opt for LA or Houston then go from there.

everyone has their own reasons to take certain flights :)

i recall flying tokyo to asia and the budget Scoot was cheaper than anyone else by a whopping 70%!

so i bit the bullet ... you weren't allowed to drink your own water ... probably had to pay for each breath though i can't recall. these flights are worse but you gotta do what you gotta do!

I’m advocating for that to replace all non-supersonic options!

Well, the 777-300ER they have in storage have a lot shorter range.

As does the 787-10 they have on deferred order (and some have been swapped for more -9)

So not sure what they think they have up their sleeve. Or from where.

Unless they are talking the new configuration -9s (which are expected) with less seating etc. And thus less pre-sold weight and a bit more range stretch.

Or the 16,000km 777x-8. Buttttt as far as I know no firm offers and or delivery schedule yet from this side.

AIUI, those still-to-be-delivered -9s are specially configured for these routes, with more Business, more Premium Economy and significantly fewer Cattle Class*. This will give a lighter but relatively more revenue earning passenger load, increasing range.

* A 9-across B787 'Economy' seat is truly Cattle Class, as nasty and squeezy as a 10-across B777.
Sorry Air NZ, I won't be flying either of those

Also the new 787-9s will be GE powered not Rolls Royce which will apparently deliver a 1-2% fuel burn improvement.

There was talk about max takeoff weight improvement for the next air nz batch - not sure where this got too. Saw an article recently talking about it, but can't lay my hands on it at the moment.

Air NZ Have dropped they number of seats they are selling on the return trip from 215 to 180. (for reference the trip in the other direction with favorable winds can take 260 seats). Air NZ currently has 275 seat and 302 seat 787-9's. They are using the 275 seat version, with 15 passenger seats needed to be available for crew reset etc.

On the Fiji proposed (but not required in the end) gas & go, It is in the media that Air NZ flew an entire airliner to fiji (crew only), in anticipation for it's arrival. Would have been very expensive for the airline, and means the stop would have tripped over the limit for crew work hour requirements.

It's also a 787-9, just with a less dense cabin layout (227 seats). Less total seats means more premium class seats, which (assuming they can sell them), means more revenue per passenger.
