I had hoped to fly to Melbourne this summer only to find that Virgin have cancelled their summer flights to Melbourne

Do we have enough people to petition for them to reinstate that flight?

Petitioning wont do you any good. Airlines will made decisions based on the likelihood of making money.

They obviously tried it and decided it wasn't worth it. No amount of begging will change their mind unless something has fundamentally changed about the demand situation that would mean they are assured of a profitable route (or at least, more profitable than alternatives given limited aircraft).

I booked Dunedin Melbourne via CHCH return the other week for new years, it was an eye watering $1300ish. Wouldn't have bothered if I didn't have air points. Don't leave your bookings late and don't go at popular times :)

some history: (my limited not 100% accurate knowledge)

Dunedin International Airport only flies to Brisbane a few of times a week with Virgin. Apparently they have a contract with Virgin to fly that route.

In the last few years Virgin also flew direct to Sydney and Melbourne in December and January only. But stopped it this year.

Anyway, as you said ... it's pointless ... and I can't do any Christmas shopping anymore

And losing 48 hours each way in the travelling process somehow.

Virgin used to fly at $200-300 one way around $550 return ... and only using up 24 hrs per one way

(oh and what time did you get up to make the 6am international flight)

Departs Dunedin at 12.45 NZ time, arrives in Melbourne at 5.50pm Melbourne Time. Leave Melbourne 10.30AM get back to Dunedin 7.10pm. Could be worse.

Actually not a bad idea.

Wife and i go away every couple of years for 4 or 5 weeks to different places such as Asia, Europe USA, but decided that next trip we will do a 5 week trip around the Mainland and poke our noses into off the beaten track places etc. What we save in airfares etc we can live it up down south.

Mate, you live in one of the most scenic parts of the planet, chuck them in the car, grab a tent and eat fish and chips on your way around, kids will love it. If not no more f$#king holidays for them.
