A few years ago I used to attend University of Auckland. On top of one of the buildings there (I think mathematics and computer sciences) there's a bit sticking out the top which looks suspiciously like an airport control tower, as if it's for training or similar. Just out of curiousity, does anyone know what this actually is?

Mind control to assist students with maximising debt and ensuring the university gains top dollar.

It's been there at least since I was at Uni 45 years ago. Could be totally wrong but my understanding was always that it's associated with the physics department and the study of meteorology. Back in the day, amongst other things, there was reportedly some laser gear in there that measured air pollution - particulates in the air between there and some point on the North Shore/Devonport.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Whoops - so sorry for not looking back on this post!

That sounds like it could be in line with what it is. It may have even pointed to the radar/comms station on Mt Vic, perhaps.

I've noticed the last couple of times I've been in the area that there is heavy work underway on that building - I haven't been able to spot the tower. Be interesting to see if it's still there once all the dust settles (literally!).
