So I read that AirNZ - VIrgin partnership is in a bad state; let's just say fast-forward and the alliance is cut and AirNZ losses a foothold in Australian domestic market ...

Now Dunedin-Brisbane is the only "international" flight in the "international" airport, and that is serviced by Virgin.

When that ends can someone petition AirNZ to fly to Melbourne from here? I want to fly direct to Melbourne from Dunedin!

A long shot I guess ...

If you provide them with a viable business case that proves the route can be flown profitably I'm sure they would consider it! Perhaps when the DCC has finished paying off the stadium, they could chip in a subsidy :-}

Viable or not getting someone to listen is the hard bit I am sure.

Hmm IIRC the Airport has a deal with Virgin that Virgin will fly that route for a period ... perhaps it's lobbying the Airport to deal with Air NZ ...

Where did you read the Virgin AU/Air NZ TT partnership is in a bad state? It's anything but, and currently in the process of being renegotiated as it expires in 2018. Both airlines need each other so there is very little chance of this ever being ended unless regulators refuse permission for it.

Air NZ's part ownership of Virgin AU and the dispute surrounding that is another matter entirely.

Umm ... the Herald said luxon wants to sell their stake by the end of the month. Or did i read that wrong. Maybe he wants to fix it by end of the month?

Why do NZ taxpayers own a airline again

They need virgin to get domestic Australian fights connection. Paper value might not be an issue.

Selling the stake means nothing for the TT alliance. That will still exist.

The TT alliance is the for the benefit of both airlines, it's not really to benefit of customers (although they'll put up a pretty good argument that it is). Virgin is just such a terrible TT product compared to Air NZ, and that's saying a lot when I normally fly bag only.
