how do they justify that sort of increase, there is no improvement to service......if said service even runs regularly (Pukekohe trains)

Do you only travel one zone? It says on that website you'd be better off using Hop card for individual trips (takes more than 45 trips to go over the $140).

Otherwise prices aren't really changing are they? Current two-zone pass is $200 and 3-zone is $250 (so three zone travelers are grinning here I take it?).\

I don't use Trains or Buses, but I do use ferries, and I wish my monthly pass was that cheap ($325 currently, will probably go up over $350 within the next six months..)

This is just your classic AT/Auckland Council tricks at work again. They'll act like they are looking out for a relatively small group of people (those who used to travel VERY long distance and used the all-zones pass) whilst increasing the costs of the vast majority or perhaps doing bugger all for them. They are bound to win.

I take it you currently get a 1-zone monthly pass. Perhaps you should consider dropping the monthly passes.

As per the link you sent: "It is likely that you would have to make over 45 journeys in a month under simpler fares to spend more than $140 using HOP money, so a better option might be to use HOP money rather than buy a new all-zones monthly pass for $200."

It would be interesting to run the numbers to see if in fact that will be the case. AFAIK The simpler fares are going to be generally cheaper too.

Gone are the good old days where in CHCH you could catch a bus to town from Sumner, and back again within 4 hours for free. More people would catch public transport if it was done like that now.

Friend just worked it out.......

I did the math, if we use our card with cash only, the cost:

  • Silverdale – Smales – Takapuna = $7.80
  • Return trip = $15.60
  • That equals to $312 a month

So paying $200 a month is the best move for me, just seems like hell of a hike.

Wow, were you only paying $140 per month for that before?

All  your travel is within one 'Zone' according to: https://at.govt.nz/media/1661860/monthly-pass-map-a3-feb-2016.pdf

I was under the impression that if you travel started and finished within the one zone (under the new rules) that you would only be charged one fare, no matter how many services you used. I don't know if that makes it cheaper for you, but it *should*.

Ahhh, so you will get stung because you are travelling within a zone (albeit almost from one edge of the zone to the other) and so currently pay $140....

Unfortunately I think you have to see this as having had a good deal in the past based on how the zones are laid out, but that good deal is about to stop frown

I live in Hillcrest and travel to the CBD and so have always had to pay the higher 2 zone fare because I go over the bridge.......
