This year's present is (drum roll) .... a complimentary short haul upgrade.  Wow ...

So the five figure sum I spent with airnz this year was so inadequate they need to give me a 'gift' that I have to buy a flight to use and even then is subject to availability.

They honestly would have been better to do nothing ...

I'm in two minds about it.

As somebody who's not AKL based the short haul RU is pretty worthless anyway. These can be used to go from seat to works deluxe on TT services (but this is not a published benefit and 99% of people would be unaware of this) but in all honesty I'd prefer to gift it to somebody I know in AKL who can get to enjoy BP as I don't care about a crap $2 microwave meal TT.

The value of the gift though is significantly higher than previous years if you can take advantage of it. Considering lots of people won't then it just shows them being cheap by not spending $40ish or so PP for things like wine and glasses like previous years.

Or business shirts. Or Blackbox noise cancelling headphones, like I got a few years back.

Nope, BlackBox. Which are quite good (I still have mine) but not Bose quality (which is what I use now).

Yes I still use my BlackBox C20s for when on the plane as sleeping with a head phone is not very comfortable.

Do you have the new QC35s?

It is worth remembering as well that the number of Elite members has grown significantly over the past couple of years, especially when they gave Elite to lots of Westpac credit card customers.

But that means more money spent on Air NZ, and if I was spending 4/5 figure sums with them each year I'd also want a decent reward or gift from them. :-)

But define a "decent" gift?

A RU is effectively a $250 gift as that's the value of an APD upgrade from economy to BP on a TT or Pacific flight. If I lived in Auckland I'd actually think it's a good gift.

The problem living outside Auckland is that it's going to be worthless to many people. While it can be used to upgrade to Works Deluxe ex WLG or CHC Air NZ don't actually advertise this or make it known to customers so most wouldn't even know you can do that. I couldn't care less about upgrading to Works Deluxe however - I'm much prefer to gift it to somebody who can get to experience BP but that then makes it a pretty poor gift for me. As much as I love flying I'm not going to go out of my way to travel to Australia via AKL and incur another ~$150 in flight costs and double the travel time.

Elite pax living outside NZ got a standard longhaul RU, but giving that to NZ based pax is an unrealistic gift as it's hard enough to clear them already without adding somewhere in the vicinity of another 15,000 - 20,000 of these into the food chain (or however many Elite's there actually are now)

Well why don't they tailor it to location based? Like you said, it's "worthless" to many people not living in Auckland.

Well not totally worthless - it's still an effective $150 value if you use it on a TT A320 flight ex WLG or CHC and use it to go from seat to works deluxe but as it's not mentioned anywhere that a short haul RU can be used for this the vast majority of people will be totally unaware of this.

Hmm doesn't sound very convincing still. But is a $150/$250 gift decent when you spend a loot of money with them each year? Surely the ~$500 mark would seem like a better valued premium gift for being a premium customer. We're not even talking Gold customers here..

If they really were giving out wine glasses as gifts a few years back, surely people who have the ability to stay on Elite have the ability to buy a couple of $40 wine glasses?
