Return tickets on expedia state the cheapest fare from Auckland to Ontario in economy class is around 1800 NZD on United travelling Sept - October.  Is $1800 reasonable.  Thanks in advance - never travelled to Ontario before.

The city or province? :p I'm assuming the city\airport in which case google seems to think it's better to fly to LAX then it's only 40 min drive.

To the Ontario airport.  Its my elderley mother and she just needs it to be easy.

It's probably easier and much cheaper just to fly into LAX.  Any flights from AKL to ONT are going to involve at least one (and probably two) connecting flights, and if your mother is going to end up transiting through LAX anyway, it's going to save time and money to travel the 50km to Ontario by taxi, or to arrange to have someone meet her at the airport.

$1800 one-way seems way over the top. Maybe you're looking at school holidays?

 

On Expedia, I found $692.29 AKL-ONT 30/9/17 one way, with United (actually AirNZ under code-share) via SFO. Return $1444.

 

Try Hopper.com... they predict cheapest time to buy tickets.
