I’m heading to Vietnam and Cambodia in mid August.

Sadly, neither country is on VF’s $5 roaming (which is odd given some of the places that are!) so I am faced with finding an alternative option (200Mb of data from VF is $50…!)

Obviously I can (and will) use wifi where I can do so, but what is the most cost effective solution for using my phone for calls etc? Since it’s work, I’d like to be able to access voice mail and so on as well if I can.

The phone is a Samsung Galaxy S8+ if that is important.

Type of handset is not related to the cost of using services while roaming if you want to use your VodafoneNZ SIM then you have to pay the roaming rates

Yes. I listed the handset in case it was relevant to anyone's suggestion as to how best to make use of it overseas.

It seems a Viettel Sim is one solution where I can get GBs of data for a small fraction of the VF roaming cost.

I almost always use the $5 per day roaming as it's one of the best things about VF but the charges for Vietnam and Cambodia are extremely high.

As Linux said, getting a local sim is probably the easiest option.

If it is voicemail that you are worried about - Could you forward calls to a Temp 2Talk number and use their Voicemail to Email service?

To call into the VodafoneNZ Voicemail platform just call +6421700700 from any other phone

can't recall what carrier I used but the major ones all do a tourist package. They've all got shops/agents at Ho Chi Minh airport if you're flying into there (off to your left just before you exit the terminal building). I went to the one at the very end, the lady showed me a sheet with the various packages, I handed over just shy of half a million dong (about $20) and my phone, 5 minutes later I walked out with 3GB worth of mobile internet connection , thousands of txt and more local minutes than i could eat, and a handful of international minutes (about 30 if I recall).

Can't help with Cambodia sorry.

ETA: don't try and post to GZ from a Vietnam IP address, you'll get bounced.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.
