Next month I'm flying to Los Angeles via Sydney on VA - my query is whether I can use the Koru lounge (I'm a Koru Member) in Sydney during the layover? Any ideas before I ask Air New Zealand.

No. The joint venture (and access) is only available on Trans Tasman services.
Technically speaking Virgin Australia long haul is a different airline to Virgin Australia short haul.
Your not flying a Air NZ ticketed flight, so no you wont be able to.
The little things make the biggest difference.
Shindig:
Your not flying a Air NZ ticketed flight, so no you wont be able to.
While this is a generic rule and is the correct in 99% of cases access to the SYD/MEL/BNE Koru lounge to NZ HVC's when flying on VA long haul did seem to be granted on a case by case basis when VA used the Koru lounges. It was not official policy, but I did hear of it occurring.
Now that VA no longer use the Koru lounges there is no way to gain access.
