Hi Geekzoners,

Going to be in Melbourne for a week soon, with 2 kids aged between 6 and 9. Going to be staying Novotel Collins St, and are after reccomendations for Breakfast, lunch and dinner spots, within walking distance.

Kids aren't hugely fussy, and will do some 'western' (fried rices, mild Phad thai) asian dishes.

We are accor club members, and with the 2 for 1 meals and kids eat free, are looking for alternatives to the hotel, around what we'd pay at the hotel. Don't want flash and pricey, just good honest food places at good prices. If it does a good beer (not Fosters, VB, 4X, Cascade, Heineken, Stella etc), then that's a bonus.

We liked captain Melvilles (upper end near Victoria Market), I think last time we were there for a week we ate there twice. Another day we hiked up lygon st (was hard work with a 6yo...but luckily only one, so I piggy backed him most of the way), and Stalactites (on Lonsdale St).

Failing that any place at Southbank is ok.

ZOMG I miss going there so much.

Hardware Lane (runs between Bourke and Londsdale a block west of Elizabeth) has a good selection of restaurants.

Mrs Parmas (parmigianas done lots of different ways).

Depending on your kids pickiness,

Chinatown (Little Bourke towards Exhibition st) has a lot of interesting places.

Vietnamese (Victoria St, slightly out of the CBD, but easy to get to via trams) has some good places.

Most of Southbank might be a little higher end, unless you go to South Wharf (past the Exhibition Centre), we went to Munich Brawhaus with a group last trip but it wasn't particularly kid friendly (although ours were 7 and 3).

Not an eating place - but great place to visit with kids is Artvo in habourtown.

Just came back last week from Melbourne with 2 kids and they loved it.
Spent 2+ hours wandering around. There are 100s of paintings on the walls/floors that look 2D but when you photograph a person they appear in a 3D image.

Really cool.

Google #artvo for lots of examples.

About $75 for a family of 4 but well worth it.

Harbour town is in the docklands area in the free tram zone so easy and free transport,
I would recommend going a weekday - Thursday or Friday if possible - gets crowded in the weekends and also lots of school kids beginning of the weeks (or so I was told).

Sorry can't really help you with eating places - we started with family in the suburbs.

Every 2nd lane is full of cafes and restaurants. You won't be short of options.

I will get fat just thinking about Melbourne food. If you like spicy go to Laksa king and get combination Laksa.

Down the bottom of the city, just of flinders lane are all these awesome side alleys with food places. They are pretty packed most of the time and most of them have some good food.

If you go out, check our church st/chapel street. Or the Fitzroy/Richmond areas, you will need to travel to get there though. You can uber or get trams.

The other thing I really enjoyed was fish and chips down at st kilda beach.
