Hi

I'm looking at going to Europe next year with my family I may want to work in the UK afterwards. We all have NZ passports

From what I can work out it would appear

1. We can visit the UK for 6 months with a standard visitors visa

2. If I renew my UK passport I have right of abode as would my wife and children

3. I assume if I have the right of abode I can work without sponsorship?

3. Since the NZ High Commission no longer issues or renews passports the UK passport office has advised I can apply online for renewal but I must send by my expired passport back (I guess I can go to a passport office there and get that done rather than risking it getting lost in transit or the UK)

Sound right ?

ps: I've yet to check how long we can stay in the EU e.g. France on a tourist visa before having to go the uk or somewhere

Sorry, can't comment on your queries with any authority.

However, there is a lengthy thread on the Whirlpool (Australia based) forums that may be of interest, and may well cover some of what you're asking:

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

1. You don't need a visa, you can visit for 6 months (might need proof of return tickets to NZ)

2. If you have a UK Passport you can stay as long as you want,

  • this does not automatically  transfer to your wife or children they will need a visa to stay longer than 6 months
  • it used to be that you need a job earning over a certain amount before you could bring a foreign wife into the country

3. You have no restrictions on working in the UK

4. You can apply while in the UK

ps: you can pretty much travel visa free throughout the EU with a NZ passport

Dont quote me on this though, its from my own understanding and research.

In the past year, on two separate occasions, I've renewed a UK passport and applied for a new UK passport for my son (born here). Documents were sent tracked and couriered from here (NZPost) and returned via DHL courier service (supporting docs in one package and a few days later the passport). There were no issues. The alternative is finding your way to a passport office in the UK, which will then most likely still transit it to Liverpool anyway, and taking all your supporting documents with you on your trip.

Please let me know if I am wrong but it sounds like you have dual citizenship with the UK?

Surely in that case you are required by UK law to enter the UK on your UK passport? best to check that and get it renewed anyway.

It used to be that if one person had Right of Abode, the other could apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, after 1 year in the UK.... the wonderful SET(M) guidelines. The kids can stay are parents settled but I think it gets a little messy for schooling.

All passports go to Liverpool for processing but I have never had an issue and the service has been good, luckily... but there have been instances when passport processing has gone horribly wrong, especially in the months before summer want to travel.

It's much less expensive to renew a UK passport in the UK than it is to do it here, so if you're there for a while, better to do it there.

I'm not aware of any requirement to enter the UK with a UK passport if you're a citizen.  My kids are UK citizens but don't have UK passport and have travelled there on NZ ones

Unless your kids actually have UK passports even if they are with you, they won't be able to use UK lanes at airports.

Even if kid is an infant, that trumps your UK passport and the two of you will have to join that long long non uk queue.

Why? I've entered NZ on my UK passport and UK on my NZ passport before, it's a non issue.

If you want to stay longer than 6 months then yes, you should enter on UK passport, but it's not hard to take a cheap flight to Europe and come back on it within the 6 months.

The real fun part moving to the UK is trying to open a bank account/ get an NI number.

That hasn't been my experience - my wife and I have UK passports but our kids don't, and we always use the UK/EU lane at LHR

Flown from nz to UK. Queued up with nz born screaming infant, got to front and the moron in blue said he'd let me through but not the child, I appealed saying child would be uk citizen anyway. He got annoyed and directed me the that back of the queue where I stood for another 45 minutes...

I'd only been out of UK for 18 months from living there too. Which he could see whennhe scanned my passport...

What to do later in the year..
