How do you guys plan it?  Do you head away at last minute and then what about accomodation?  Do any of you drive there and back the same day?

I went there on the 19 August for 5 nights and on the 26 for 4 nights.  The first week I got 3 days of skiing, then it was closed and then only the bottom area was opened with quite thick cloud on my last day the day I was suppose to drive back.  The second week I did 0 days of skiing.  Least 2 days both mountain was closed (even Happy Valley), 1 of them I think Whakapapa was opened but only Happy Valley and Rock Garden but I had to drive from Ohakune.  The last day only Whakapapa was open with strong winds only Happy Valley was open, I did go for a sightseeing wander but when the wind came you saw the snow going horizontal hitting you.

The forecast for next week is a mixture of sunshine, cloud, wind and southwesterlies picking up.  Not long to go before the season finishes.  Yes, I have a seasons pass, got 3 days out of it so far.

One week trips booked ahead and can't do much about the weather.

Otherwise for weekend trips, decide on the Thursday night and book that night, for a Friday after work trip and return on Sunday night. Heading down tomorrow night from Auckland actually.

Pretty much this,

If you are planning more than a weekend you  book it and are pretty much at the whim of Ruapehu's weather...

For a weekend you confirm as close as you think you can get away with arranging accommodation.. as the season moves into spring accommodation gets easier as many people lose interest in the snow once Daylight savings rolls round....

Our ski club allows weekend bookings to be cancelled up till noon on Wednesdays. So take a look on Wed morning at the forecasts and pull pin if it looks bad.

Bad weather a very annoying and inescapable downside to Ruapehu skiiing, I'm afraid.

Oh, is this a place on Whakapapa, itself?

Yep rsc.org.nz has one lodge bottom of Bruce Rd, two lodges on hut flat and one lodge in Ohakune village.

Any other GZers in Ruapehu ski clubs?

Used to be a member of the Alpine sports club which has 2 huts 10 minutes walk from the top car park that you can ski down to the lifts.

We found that we just didn't use it enough to justify (not that it is that expensive), and now we have two young children.  When they get a bit older might look at it again.

When going down by myself typically book in to Discovery cabins, $80 for a very rough cabin with a 24hr cancellation policy.  Note they are very rough and you have to walk to the shared toilets.  They are about half way from national park to Whakapapa village
