Hi all, I have two family members travelling together at the end of the month, they both are Air NZ Silver and each have 1 recognition upgrade. I cannot find a way through the system to submit an upgrade request together.

 

Now I know I could go into both their accounts and request upgrades separately, but this will most likely result in only 1 being upgraded and them being separated on the flight.

 

Any advice on how I could achieve this? I was going to phone Air NZ later but lately I've had a lot of reps lately who have been easily confused, and this will most likely do so.

I'm confused by what you're trying to do.

 

You lodge an RU by logging into your Airpoints account and doing it from there. You can't lodge them from a single login.

 

Assuming they are on the same PNR the upgrades will be looked at together if there is space at T-3 days but there is certainly no guarantee (no matter how you go about this) that a situation won't occur where one person will be upgraded and the other won't happen as that's just how upgrades work. Upgrades are ranked in order, and simply allocated that way.

 

If by chance the last upgrade available is available it will be offered to one of the pax, even if they're on a split PNR. If this didn't happen this way most people would think it was unfair. Since they're silver the upgrades very likely won't clear until the airport so they will have the opportunity to decline the upgrade for one person if they don't want to be split.

Thanks Steve. Yes I was trying to see if there was a way to treat both RU's as an upgrade together, ie if there is only 1 upgrade remaining then they both don't get it, if that makes sense...

 

If I go the One Up route, are both pax's upgrade treated as a single request? So if there are no 2 spare seats then neither get it?

 

Its a shame to waste the RUs, but I guess given their request to be together on the flight thats just how it is.

This would normally happen, but at the gate it's perfectly normal for say one pax in a group of two to be upgraded which is how the system needs to work. There would be outrage is people were skipped in the list, remembering there are plenty of cases where people on the same PNR may not travel together.

 

OneUp is treated in the same way, and you'd have to be crazy to lodge a OneUp if you have a RU since you'll end up even further down the upgrade list.

I'm flying back from UK in late November and my other half says I should see of I can get upgraded to premium economy as I'm heading back to work and she will stay in economy with the kids...

Sounds like a test...

I used to travel for work often, and at times there could be up to 10 of us on the same PNR. A few of us would request upgrades and sometimes only a select few who requested would get it. Yes I would of been outraged if all requests were skipped if everybody under the same PNR who requested upgrades couldn't get it.





If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

I’m travelling to japan with my daughter, booked on separate bookings but travelling on same flights. I upgraded myself, and gifted upgrade to my daughter. Used two recognition upgrades (only upgrading return legs). I rang the call centre, asked them to process the daughters gifted upgrade request to match mine, and they did it no problem.

Why not ring them and see what they say?

Update - Well I called and the lady just told me to individually submit each request for upgrades from their own accounts. She said the system *should* recognise the PNR and try to process the two upgrades together. She did stress to make sure I submit the two upgrades right after one another.

 

I logged in this morning (4 days until departure) and they had both been upgraded, just had to select seats. Thanks for the help everyone!

We said at the time that an option box stating "please upgrade only if all passengers on the PNR/booking can be upgraded together" - ie voluntarily saying please don't upgrade either of us unless both can be - would have been nice.

That is exactly what I was trying to avoid. Please don't upgrade either if only 1 can be upgraded..

 

Sounds like it is a lot more common than I thought. I suspect its not worth their effort to amend the system to allow for such a feature.
