I'm not going to name which one, but earlier this year one of the very big booking sites was advertising rooms in this hotel as from September 2018.

The Christchurch Novotel was originally scheduled for completion in 'late 2017' & the latest date is now April 2019.  They still have a huge amount of work to do on the exterior & from what I can see an even bigger job to get all the rooms fitted out in time.  And there's quite a lot of work to do on the road & parking areas around the hotel but that aspect of the project seems to be going well.  Personally, I wouldn't bet more than $10 that they will make the new opening date of April 2019.

It's really strange how some projects in Christchurch are plagued with delays yet others go up without dramas at all.   The new Hoyts Theatre & eateries complex has just opened in the CBD, & this got done quickly and efficiently.  The new Hoyts has a bank of kiosks similar to airport check-in where you can purchase your movie tickets - so I must try it soon.

Plenty of media articles discussing all the issues they've had with the project and the reasons why it is delayed.

Theres the rumored to likely be 'public plane viewing area' in the middle. (and maybe this end if not offices)

Not overlooking terribly much.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

It reminds me of a huge container sitting on a scissor lift.

I thought it WAS sitting on a scissor lift until I looked more closely!

It's fairly similar to the Novotel at Auckland airport.

Someone here in NZ does love ugly buildings - the new PWC building in Wellington is awful, for example. I sometimes think the words "architect designed home" are a euphemism for "Two rectangles stuck together"!

i  guess Hoyts is simple. big room with seats. while hotels would be abit more work. I tend to leave the self service alone, if it become a common thing, then less staff are needed, (used to work for Hoyts while studying)

Balm its gone!

Architects man, urghh!

Been involved in several projects where the poor engineers had to work out how to actually deliver the stupidly designed picture stories into reality.

In the UK, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has a division known as Building Surveying. A BS is a 'practical architect' for want of a better description.

My late father always used to say that the difference between a BS and an architect was that BS's wanted to put up useful buildings, extensions etc and architects wanted to put up monuments to themselves!
