Anyone who travels to or through the US can tell you how blasted crappy the experience of going through CBP and TSA can be. People from a laundry list of random countries can sign up for a pre-screening program that lets you do such awesome stuff as leave your shoes on going through and leave electronics in your bag - even cooler is you can avoid having to do the stupid interview with CBP every time you show up.

Australia has been approved to join the scheme, which makes me wonder if New Zealand could achieve this. I've emailed the Minister of Customs after my last contact basically resulted in "we looked at it but it's too expensive".

you can buy a CLEAR membership, which at least gets you to the front of TSA queues

I hope so, I travel to Canada every couple of years and we usually nip south of the border for some shopping but it's gotten to be such a painful and laborious process I decided to not bother last time.

No we can't. That's only available to US citizens and permanent residents.

Not until we let their nuclear ships into our waters.

How do we know they are not secretly in our waters, undetectable?

Well that's not the point :)  They may well be, but we're vocal about not wanting them.

I don't know what happened, but last time we went, on one flight we had our bags opened by the TSA. After that, all our boarding passes had TSA pre-screened printed on them and we got to use the cool queue.

Neither of us are US citizens.. so i'm guessing computer glitch or judged mostly harmless. Whatever it was we were grateful.

Their own website says you need a US passport, US permanent resident card, US state drivers license, or US military ID. Being not a citizen or resident, I don't have any of those things :/
