Can anyone advise on their typical cost for using Uber?

I used it for the first time last night in Chch out of necessity. I was with two others using the UberX option. We were driven for ten minutes just 6km and it ended up costing little over $30. It was midnight on Saturday. Seemed pretty expensive to me but I have no point of reference. It's way above what the fare estimators quote but I don't get how this "surge pricing" bs works.

Thoughts?

This surge price "bs" works by increasing price when the demand goes up. If I recall correctly Surge Price is no longer shown - instead you see an estimate of the fare to pay. You can just not accept it and get a cab - which would be ideal to compare prices.

Easiest way to see the "normal" price is to simply enter the start and destination when it's quiet and look at the quote.

What price were you quoted when you booked the ride? Unless the driver took a very different route this is what you should be charged. The app no longer shows "surge", but simply quotes a price for a journey that can vary depending on demand.

Taxis in Christchurch are incredibly expensive as well. Last time I had to catch one down there I'm pretty sure the flagfall was about $3.95 and then $3.95 per km which is well above what you pay elsewhere in NZ.
