Uluru has now been closed to climbers. When I was there I could have climbed it, but chose not to. Instead I climbed King's Canyon, which as far as I know, does not insult the local people. We did walk around Uluru, which was a much more satisfying experience than assaulting it. I support the decision to close it. On ABC tonight was a whole queue of pathetic white people determined to be the last to deface the rock face. These people are the main reason the climb is now closed. I found it amusing, in a sorry sort of way. Oh my god! My whole life will be ruined if I can't climb that rock! Yeah, right. Grow up and get over it.

With the amount of rubbish left on Everest I would agree.

For people who do not understand.

How would they feel if someone came along and desecrated the grave of a loved one.

So keep off, show respect.

I could never understand the want to climb it in the first place. What's there to see apart from a whole lot more flattish scrub speckled desert?

I do understand.  I have always wanted to climb Mt Ruapehu but have never got round to it.  If I found out that as of a certain date i wan't allowed to climb it I would be do my best to climb it before that date.

i am not sure why you needed to state "pathetic white people"

I don't blame them some tourists leaving rubbish and crap everywhere!

No responsibility! Only takes a few to mess it for others

Just a bit of gratuitous blowback.

They do look a bit pathetic, though, queuing up just so they can be the last to do something that is deeply offensive to the caretakers of that land.

The example you cite is not the same. It is just a matter of respect for the people who have been there a hell of a lot longer than some plonker who wants to take a selfie.

Although they should close Everest, for a few reasons including all the rubbish they leave up there, I doubt they will, because there is too much money in it.

The example I used is similar. You used to be able to climb Ngauruhoe. Now you are strongly guilted out of it

I walked around Uluru about three months ago.. There were alot of people climbing at the time, despite all the signage stating not to. (and explaing the reasons why)

I watched a family with two little kids (guessing about 5) trying it.. There really is only one place to climb it.. and it has chains on the way up..

The kids were coming back down, scooting down on their backsides.. not standing, not holding on to anything. If you screw up with this climb, chances are you will die.. It was completely stupid. People are idiots.

Aparently at least 35 people have died climbing it in the past.. https://www.environment.gov.au/system/files/resources/4039eb6a-b3e7-49f0-b28d-200793b53057/files/uktnp-a4factsheet-pleasedontclimb-small.pdf

I can see attraction with wanting to do something you are not supposed to do.. and now being told you can't do.. I'm not getting all high and mighty because I chose not to climb it.

People will still climb it once the chains are removed. Some of those will die.

Australia should be closed to the Australians who have desecrated the Aboriginals and continue to do so. About time they signed a backdated treaty.

I watched some interviews of the queuing wannabe climbers on the last day. There were the expected ignorant reasons for being there ("climbing is on my bucket list", "wanted to be one of the last to do it") but the one that struck me was a particularly unpleasant American woman said she wouldn't have bothered visiting if she wasn't able to climb it, and her partner who said it was "money" and they shouldn't close it.

For me, it is on my "bucket list" as well. But a respectful visit, not a climb.
