If my wife and I decide to do the 17 hour longhaul flight to europe and she buys business class ticket with lie flat bed etc and I buy cattle class can we swap seats half way through so we both get 6 or more hours of sleep. If not why not? No real loss to the carrier.

Not strictly true. The general airline policy is that you are prohibited from moving up cabin classes. The @sbiddle of the world can come down classes and mix with the great unwashed if they so desire.

The loss to the carrier is that you won't buy 2 business class tickets if you can swap half way.

You could argue that you wouldn't anyway. But there will be people richer than you for whom that's an option.

You obviously replied just as I edited this after posting it!

Most airlines have no restrictions with people going back to another cabin to visit people, but they do strictly prohibit passengers from moving seats between cabins.

Is it true that they ask you to return to your allocated seat for landing, is so if they crash, your remains are more easily identified by your seat # ??

Even that is not rigid. Returning from a business trip several years ago, on the final leg across the Tasman I ended up on the same flight as my wife flying back from visiting relatives in AU (her flight had changed so it was purely by chance). Did not need a science degree to work out the Brownie points situation, so after checking with the Qantas cabin staff went back an offered to swap seats with the guy sitting next to her (after offering it to her). For some reason, he didn't seem to hesitate. Lucky day for one econ class passenger! A rigid policy could have come in handy that time.
